Help designing a blowpipe

So, I'm designing a league of african explorers and the leader will be a cross between Robinson Crusoe and a character from H.P Lovecraft (a explorer with a cursed talisman that has been hiding during years). Of course he will be accompanied by a friendly native: Saturday :)

Now, I want to give Saturday a blowpipe, I feel it's very characteristic (he's from south america) but I have some problems with the stats. I don't know how far this things can reach, if they are easy to use (SV) or how to manage the pluck modifier (I'm tempting to give it a +1 taking in account for the weapon and poison).

Also, other member of the league is going to be an old professor (the miniature is the profesor from pulp miniatures "safari into danger") and I was planning to give him a spell but no weapons. You know, the typical old professor (think of Marcus Brody and Indiana Jones father's). What kind of spell/ skill would you give it to him to make it useful? I'm planning to give him leadership +1 and medicine, but I think he needs something more.
