His Majesty O'Keefe-Truth or Fiction?

The South sea adventure movie starring Burt Lancaster,turns out is based on David O'Keefe"(Loosely},who shipwrecked on Yap in 1871 and then began trading THe prized Rai stones from Palau and went missing at sea in 1902. Cool scene w/ German landing party at end of movie,which is why I bought and painted the Askari minis.

.That is incredible,what a small world,until.,two days ago ,I thought it was just a movie,then i read a reference to him from some link i read about the Island of Yap.And now he has a legacy,I wonder if they know what happened to  him?Thanx .,for the info.

Yap is an amazing place.  When we visited in 2012 we discovered that the people of Yap restrict the Christian and Mormon missionaries to only the capital city of Kolonia where they have had very little success.  The Yap islanders have successfully preserved their own culture, and still do their traditional ceremonies for themselves (not only for tourists).

I had a sandwich in O'Keefe's bar in Kolonia.  

The women of Yap go topless, except that the younger ones generally pull on a t-shirt before they come into Kolonia.  

And the RAI stones are extremely interesting.  I had wanted to see them since I was six years old.  

A remarkable, friendly place to visit.
