...Seriously, I think that snowcat is lost unless they pick it up with a helicopter...
The vehicle shown was one of four involved in the 1955-58 Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition, one half led by British explorer Dr.(later Sir) Vivian Fuchs and the other by New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary. They started out on opposite sides of the continent and met up at the South Pole on Jan.19, 1958. (Hillary was not originally scheduled to travel to the Pole but he apparently saw the chance to get there before the British expedition and took it, arriving there on Jan.3. His was only the third party to accomplish the feat, nearly 46 years after Robert Scott's fateful journey.)
The Tucker Sno-Cat in the picture, which weighs about 3 tons, was suspended over the 60' crevasse for over 5 hours. It
was recovered, in what must have been an amazing feat of engineering! Must try and see if Fuchs' and Hillary's account, 'The Crossing of Antarctica' is still available in print. Sounds like a good read!
