And lo, they came from the brake fluid and thus were reborn unto us....

Coporals Harris and Parker and trooper Brown.

Trooper Robinson, Corporal Grimes and Trooper Lawrence

Then there were the 6 that were already part done when the oldies took their bath. They would be;

Troopers Rogers, Derby and Holmes.

Closely followed by Corporal Smith (sniper), Trooper Wayne (allergies) and Corporal Jones (forward observer).

A group shot of the remnants of the 4th company, and the command Staff of Major Valentine after they had recieved a severe mauling at the hands of the rampaging orks on Rynns world.

And finally, we have Jip Seerozli, a wandering fortune teller who had come to the attention of the local authorities shortly before the invasion, believed by those in the know to be an un-sanctioned psyker. However, all records have been lost under more pressing issues, (the ork invasion) and so Jip continues at large for the time being.

Excellent.  :D Well worth the pain of all that brake fluid.

Still say they need a dreadnought in support...  ;)

Lovely work on the Psyker too.
Ray.

Lots of fun, those Troopers are brimming with idiosyncratic charm.

No cookie cutter, faceless military machine here, but a group of personalities... destined to be ripped limb from limb by extra terrestrial horrors with appalling regularity I suspect, but y'know, thats just the way it is.

Great work.

Nothing more RT than an army dread. One on the way.

Finally got around to playing the 'Battle at the Farm'.

Here's a sort of AAR.

I only remembered to get my camara out after we'd finished the first turn lol

Still not much was missed, the Marines were in hidden deployment with just two sentries on the board, and the orks deployed behind the burnt out generator  on Bulther's Rise.

Thrugg split his forces,  he went right towards the orchard together with Hruk's Squad and another squad of five troopers, moving flat out to close the distance to the farm. In the great tradition of Orky leadership, Thrugg stayed at the back, behind the two squads, purely so he could put the boot in and keep his boys moving of course.

Hruk, in contrast, led from the front. Huzzah for Hruk 8)

The other two squads moved over the hill in a direct line towards the ruined farm buildings.

We join the action in the second turn where the orks continued their rush to get into bolter range. The two squads moving over open ground were suddenly fired on by a marine toting a missile launcher, fortunately for them the marine's aim was off and the plasma missile fell wide. Brown trouser moment for all the ork troopers in said squad.

On the right flank a squad of 5 marines broke covered and moved in to the orchard.

The orks on the right flank moved into bolter range and opened up on the squad of marines, needing 5 on a d6 to impact. after the smoke cleared a marine lay bleeding out in the dust. First blood to the orks.

The orks in the centre also moved into range and opened up on the marine with the launcher. However, as the marine was in hard cover in the ruins, the orks needed 6s to hit, their shots riccochetted of the ruins and the two squads grunted in frustration.

In the Marine's turn, the launcher once again fired on the squads in the centre, this time scoring a hit but only eliminating one of the orks. A squad of marines also emegred from the rubble, they opened fire on the same squad and dropped another two troopers, but the orks could smell fear in the filthy 'umans, and their resolve held.

The marines in the orchard returned fire on the orks, and although they hit they failed to penetrate the orks hides.

The orks continued to advance, the orks in the centre scored a devasting salvo on the marines in the ruins, taking down the marine with the launcher and another marine, cheers roared through the ork ranks.

The orks on the right flank have now moved into the cover of the orchard and from here fire once more on the squad of marines that stand in their way, dropping two more.

The return fire of the marines drops Hruk. (That's what you get for leading from the front dumbass. lol)
Thrugg grins as he sees his profit margin suddenly double.
The rest of the marine fire proves to be ineffective.

Things are looking pretty bad for the marines, but their moral holds and they dig in.

The orks now advance into the short range of their bolters, (a fact they will later regret,) and their fire becomes more effective eliminating two more marines, the sole survivor of the squad breaks and runs for the hills.

Just as the orks jeer and shout in triumph, a weary Pedro Cantor leaps from the rubble of the farm stead, and charges head long into the nearest ork squad, twin bolt pistols blazing. Despite recieving a volley of bolter fire that penetrates his armour, he shoots down one of the troopers before slamming into another, the unfortunate ork is pulped with a power fist to the head.

The marines remaining in the ruins follow Cantor's example and charge to meet their foes. The marine who had fled hears their cries and rallies to join the fray.

Hurrahhh lol

The orks in the centre are in disarray, one squad is all but destroyed, the surviving member embroiled in vicious hand to hand  combat with an angry marine, the other squad have formed a gun line and pour fire onto Cantor, but their efforts prove fruitless and the are charged in reply, slain but for the squad leader who flees screaming only to recieve a bolt shell in the back from Pedro's pistols.

The balnce has been re-addressed. :o

On the right flank a sole survivor from the marine squad is holding up the ork's advance, to add to their perplexion, A gore splattered Pedro Cantor is now advancing on their position.
Thrugg roars to advance and fires on the marine with his plasma pstol, but the orks have used all their luck and the shot fails to wound.

[

The three surving ork troopers fire on Cantor, forcing him back into the shelter of the ruins, the other marine also moves back to the ruins as Thrugg races towards him.

Grown bold with greedy thoughts of buried riches, Thrugg continues to advance, his plasma pistol slaying the last surviving marine, but before he can reach his hidden cash, Cantor steps from the shadows to confront the grizzled ork warrior, their eyes meet in a steely stare as time sudenly seems frozen on the smoke filled field of battle, then Trugg twitches and raises his pistol.
There is a crack  and a fizz as bolt pistol and plasma pistol fire almost simultaneously.
Cantor is not ready to die today, and Thrugg groans before dropping to the floor in a crumpled heap, a smoking hole in the middle of his chest.

On the seeing their commander fall the remaining orks fire on Cantor but their will is broken and they are no match for the marine hero.

Cantor silently surveys the bodies 0f his fallen men. It is a hollow victory :'( :'( :'(

YES! Awesome report. Looked like a hell of a fight and it brings back great memories of wargaming for the first time in my own basement all those years ago (except your terrain and minis are much nicer than mine were at the time!).

I'm pretty close to finishing what I need to run my own Battle at the Farm. Just need to finish a few scenic items and put together and paint a Pedro Cantor model.

Thanks for the report.

Very cool :)

I may have missed this- did you use the original stats for the marines?

Yeah, marines with toughness 3, power armour saves on a 4.

Works out well as the marines hit, but only have a 50% chance of wounding the toughness 4 orks, whereas the orks really struggle to hit, but when they do they often wound.

Cantor was a monster though, he pretty much single handedly turned the tide.

Over all we had a fun little game, although it was odd going back to an IGOUGO system.

I can't imagine ever playing 40k in any of it's versions with more more than a handful of models each side. The last time I did so, probably about 8 years or so ago, it was mind numbing lol

One of the best battle reports I've read for a while, it sounded like a really fun game. I must say your board and terrain is very atmospheric, well done sir. A great read and a lovely trip down memory lane. Ahh a handful of small units aside, where 40k plays best; thats why I only have a 500pt force to game with now.
