Now that I think about it, Paul Muller sculpted three or four orcs in LotR style and they were pretty good. Some funny armors though and a strange looking arm, but I wouldn't mind to see more of them.

I like those old fighting fantasy ones scurv put up a few pages ago. Really captured the cruelty, laziness and all those other bad habits that orcs should have I those pictures.

Yep. About a year ago I bought Dungeoneer, Titan, Out of the Pit, Blacksand and the 25th anniversary book for a really good deal, (not car boot sale good but an amount I was very happy with) My favourite part was about the Troglodytes and how they let prisoners free so they could have target practice.

all the fighting fantasy stuff totally influenced warhammer. Even the old world has many similarities to titan the FF game world. Their background book had the best write up on orcs ever.

Well... early WFB and 40K are really a mish-mash of... ahhem... homages. If you're familiar with UK F/SF scene in the 70-80's (especially 2000AD), it's kinda weird fun playing "Where did they borrow this from?" with Warhammer fluff. Like going over the Space Marine implants etc. and comparing that to the stuff a G.I. trooper has -- pretty much the only thing they didn't take is the blue skin.

I say early because I really haven't kept up to date with it in ages. I hope more money has b(r)ought more originality, but probably not.

Part of the same imagery is explained by actually using the same artists, and I really can't fault them for that.

Before anyone gets all huffed and puffed about this: Culture is always built on existing culture and nothing is created in a vacuum. But there's also acknowledging your roots, giving credit where credit is due. The line between homage and plagiarism is a thin one, and mostly created by admitting the fact.

I grew up with 2000ad and fighting fantasy so I really get what you are saying. Dont forget jackson and livingstone of FF started games workshop too.

Yeah, you can't really be accused of stealing your own stuff... Laserburn is also interesting as a sort of proto-40K and the same people went on to write 40K Rogue Trader, which was actually created in a studio environment with input from lots of people not just the guys who got their name on the cover.

Still, I don't think GW ever employed Michael Moorcock despite Ulthuan bearing more than a passing resemblance to Melnibone...

Personally, I like the Tolkien orcs as imagined by either Angus McBride on the old MERP covers, or some of the Peter Jackson type orcs.  I also really like this guy -

Who will be appearing on the cover of this book from Osprey Adventures next year: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Orc-Warfare-Open-Book-Adventures/dp/1472810503/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1412777928&sr=8-1&keywords=orc+warfare+pramas
