Hey, I went and ordered some of those OG Warpaint figs, namely the feathered braves on horse and on foot. Based on what I had read, I was expecting them to be substantially smaller than Artizan and Foundry (new) figs. But to my pleasant surprise, it seems they will go absolutely fine with the above said minis. And they definitely look taller than the old Foundry Apache I got. At least, that's my personal opinion.

It's true that if you glue the upper torsos straight in the hole provided with the lower torso, they will look short and 'truncated' (if that's the correct word?) However, if you first fill most of the hole with putty, and then glue the upper torso, they will look fine. Another way would be to use pinning method, and then fill the slight gap with putty. Doing this 40 times (1 bag of infantry and 1 of cavalry) is a chore, but I think it's worth it. I will post some samples when I get there.

About the horses, they're pretty close to Foundry's posse horses in terms of height, and the the good news is the cavalry lower torsos are molded in one piece with the horse, so there's no gaps to fill between a rider and it's horse, as I imagine is the case with the chiefs.

I'd like to see some pics when you've done a few, if that's possible.
So many projects..... so little time.......

Sure, I should get the pinning and puttying done tomorrow, and then I can take a couple of shots, and more when they're painted.

Incidentally, does anyone have a good web source for painting inspiration: north american indian weapons, costumes, warpaints etc? I tried googling but nothing really useful came up. I could use a good book on the subject as well, are Osprey ones any good? Other recommendations?

The Osprey volumes are usually quite good.  I have most of the ones related to the Amerindians.  As for other sources, here's a few I have.

'Dictionary of North American Indians and Other Indigenous Peoples' by Gilbert Legay 2007 (Just as it says.  A basic overall look at the Indians, with some nice artwork.)

'Encyclopedia of Native Tribes of North America' by Michael G.Johnson & Richard Hook 2007 (Nice collection of photographs and some great art from the inimitable Richard Hook)

'The Native Americans - The Indigenous People of North America' Salamander Books 1991 (Lots of colour photos, particularly of collections of Native artifacts, and some excellent artwork)

For the absolute gold standard for Plains Indians, check out 'The Mystic Warriors of the Plains' by Thomas E.Mails 1972.  Everything you need to know about 'the finest light cavalry in the world'.  He also did at least two other books, 'Dog Soldiers, Bear Men and Buffalo Women' 1973 and 'The People Called Apache' 1974.  Both are very good but are not quite to same standard as his first masterpiece.

Thanks for the tips, Archangel! I ordered Mystic Warriors of the Plains, as I found a very cheap version on sale.

Excellent book but all in black and white frommemory(Well mine is)

The Salamander book is excellent for colour plates as are the others.

I hope not, at least the description says 32 colour plates?

Mine has the colour plates but they are almost secondary to the information.  It's the b&w artwork that is more important to me.  If you really need colour, the others would be more appropriate.

It sounds promising anyways, I don't know a whole lot of the subject so information is always welcome. Maybe the pics give me some ideas about colours?

Right, here are some pics of the OG figs. I managed to apply some putty to waistlines, so hopefully they look natural. The light was bad, so the pics are a bit foggy, sorry about that.

I also took some comparison pics with Foundry posse figs as a reference point:

And finally some shots of the West Wind Cowboy Wars minis I salvaged from Noble Knight:

If you decide to pick up an Osprey, watch for "To Live and Die in the West". it is one of those compilation volumes that combines previous titles on US Cavalry, plains Indians, Apaches and a fourth subject (possibly Texas Rangers) in one book. I got mine for about $5 US at Half Price Books.

They look pretty good once they've been given a waist. How much time/effort was it overall to sort them out?

For a pack of 10 riders and 30 infantry it took me around 2-3 evenings. I have me an electric Proxxon mini-drill to drill the pinholes, which makes it quite a bit quicker. Then pinning and gluing, and finally puttying. It wasn't too bad actually.

I received the book (The Mystic Warriors of the Plains), and it's really nice! Like you said Arch, it's mostly line drawings, but very informative. And a big book it is too. Very happy with it. Thanks for the tip!
