Looking great Gary...
I sympathise with getting the colour right. I painted one of my boards four times til I got the colour right...
In the end I went with a base of Steel Legion Drab (light brown mixed in B&Q) then drybrushed heavy with yellow ochre, then dry brushed with titanium cream. I am now happy with result..
I did paint one of my cliffs the same but it looked awful. The black ones drybrushed cream looked so much better
cheers
Giles thanks for the tips.
Whilst I was waiting for the glue to dry I decided to start work on Fort Zwazantnerf. Firstly I experimented with a corner tower to get the proportions right and try out the building technique. I hadn't used 10mm blue foam for making buildings before so I wanted to see how it turned out. The result looked like this.

Actually it turned out better than I thought and much quicker to cut out and glue than foamboard. It could also be worked more easily so I could smooth off corners and add nicks to simulate old stone work and general wear and tear.
So I got to work and cut out the rest of the pieces. 3 more towers the main walls and of course the lookout tower.

Then I got work on the fort. You can see my very simple technique which was to glue each tower piece off set, and pin with cocktail sticks ro ensure rigidity and elastic bands to ensure that it sealed evenly. Here is the main fort placed together with the look out tower in the background.

It took most of Sunday to get it all to hang together and the I added the walkways to the main walls from 5mm foamboard with bracing pillars from 4mm square softwood. Here is the wip with the walls simply pinned to the towers and roughly positioned as it will end up.

Finally I mocked up the main gates which needs distressing a little. I will add some hinges and a restraining bar on the inside.

Here it is with figure for scale.

Next I need to work on the buildings inside the fort, add doors to the towers, put in place the stairways to the ramparts and generally tart it up. Finally it will be based on a 2ft square of 4mm MDF. But that is next weekends work.
In the meantime all this sandcastle building makes for thirsty work, so I am off for a beer.
