Star Blazers/ Space Battleship Yamato: My First Ships
« on: October 23, 2014, 04:31:39 PM »
Hi All,

I've had a pile of the Musashi Enterprises' ships sitting unpainted on my shelves for quite a while, and after a trip to Japan I was inspired to dust them off and start working on them.  Being new to spaceship painting, I decided to practice on some Gamilon ships before tackling the EDF ships.

They were a bit trickier to work with than I expected, but overall I think they came out OK.  However, if any veteran folks have any ideas on how to improve my painting before I move onto the next ships, please chime in.

Some additional photos and information on my assembly experience can be found on the blog:

Thanks!

Chris

Tends to happen doesn't it  :D

They look great but I might suggest a coat of matt varnish just to tone down the shininess a little bit  :)

Got a fair few of these myself.

Thanks James,

I actually gave them a coat of the Vallejo varnish, though they do seem to still shine a bit under bright light (they look flatter under normal conditions). Maybe it's from the ink.  I might need to go back and add another coat.

Try some Beaux Arts supplies (Pebeo, Liquitex, Raphael, or any brand available locally) acrylic  matte varnish (or diluted matte medium) instead.

You can also use spraycan varnish, also made for art work. Personaly I only use varnish (brush and spray) and mediums from arts supplies stores.

Thanks for the advice - not sure why I didn't think of looking at the art supply shop.  Will check it out and see what I can find.
