need help with 28mm miniatures specs
« on: 31 October 2014, 01:26:14 PM »
Hello,

We at Westfalia have regular VSF games and we were now deciding to step into the 28mm VSF/Steampunk space. We already have the first few minis in the pipeline, but one of the things I wasn't able to figure out is if I should give them a proper old-fashioned metal base or a slot like many miniatures seem to have nowadays.

I guess there's a lot of pros and cons so I am seeking input from you gents.

Thank you,

Kawe

Metal base for me and I would imagine the vast majority of VSF gamers as we tend to use mainly historical figures in our armies  :)

Get a poll going as well  :)

cheers

Thanks James, I tend to say metal myself, just I found that slots seem to be quite common.
And good suggestion with the poll, I was starting one.  :)

I don't think you can do it now, it's an option when you start the thread.

Have a word with the nice mod who runs the board and I'm sure he'll sort you out  :)

Yes, if there is a point for slottabases beyond saving metal or better casting at all?
I would argue for more versatility towards base choice, as there there exists a big market for it.

But I found the handling of slottabases always a bit troublesome, plus it gives the bases way too much attention and volume.

why not something new? slightly concave transparent disks?

Metal  penny washers are the way to go. :)

Metal bases! If a figure I like comes on a slotted base I cut the tab off and mount it on a penny or flat washer. I also use the 20mm Renderra bases.

Thanks to all for the excellent feedback. The poll is surprisingly close.
I am still not 100% sure, especially since the more skirmish and steam-punk oriented ranges all seem to come with slotta-bases.

I like slotta-bases.

I think it is easier to cut of the base and glue a washer or something similary on the feet of the figures.

On a metall base there is more work to do to place a plastic base under the feets (and I don't like that  :)).

I prefer the base to blend with the baseboard to give the illusion of no base at all.  I can't understand why anyone would want figures to go about on their own personal plinths.

Slotta bases are the devil's work in my opinion lol

Another vote for metal bases gives a nice flat contact point that allows the glue to stick to the base well. But as thin as unintrusive a base as you can make them. Otherwise you end up needing to build up the base with lots of putty to make it look level when they are really thick.

It depends on how you are going to base your minis, if they are stuck to something flat and covered with sand ect then metal bases are fine. But if as my EOTD figures they are to be placed on resin bases then slottas are much better . West wind gothic cast in bases are a total pig to remove! Just my few pence worth on the subject. BUSTED.

The votes are almost 1:2 but I am surprisingly enough less sure than I was when I started this topic. So much quality input really.
