500 figures a month?
« on: 01 December 2014, 08:39:27 AM »
As you may already know, one of the resolutions I made last January was paint more figures than I buy.

That actually went pretty well, until a few months ago I bought a giant batch of 700+ figures. I was almost ready to throw in the towel and admit defeat and consequently my purchase control started slipping as well...

...but then I noticed I had slightly closed the gap anyway.

The current score stands at 811 painted against 1304 purchased.

So that's 493 figures to break even.

And the entire month of December for the job.

Let's get cracking...

Read more about it here:

This is so insane I'll be doing daily-ish updates.

Good grief. There ends being happy I finished 150 models this year (including some minor details to completion cheats!)....  :o

Well, you gotta keep everything in perspective.

Last year, I calculated I spent over 700 hours painting. That's equivalent to 4,5 months at work. That is a choice I made. Everyone makes their own choices.

This 500 thing though... it's so insane but still borderline doable that I just have to try it.

Feel free to buy 500 figures a month, I'll even give you a discount.

But yes, some might consider 500 figures painted a month either absolutely amazing or just a little insane... As for basing 15mm on strips... I don't know of a fast method. I'd go with just leaving them on their original integral base.

So far, I've painted more figures this year than I have painted in any years prior.

That's still only about 60 figures or so.

As for basing 15mm on strips... I don't know of a fast method. I'd go with just leaving them on their original integral base.

They ain't done until they are done to the usual standard. With 15mm that means being mounted on multibases (in practice FoW medium bases). That's actually harder than strips because accessing the middle of the base is difficult without messing up the figures. With a typical DBx base you just glue them there in a line and just fill in the rear and the front.

I've been thinking about covering the base with the gunk first and then pressing figures into it -- but I'm not sure the bond would be sturdy enough. The Vallejo paste doesn't even dry hard, it's sort of rubbery.

You sir, would be elevated to my personal hall of fame if you pull that one off!  :o

When you do though, you'll have painted more miniatures in one month than I have in total, over 25 years of hobbying.  ::)

Just to put things into even more perspective for you: I grossed approximately... 1 finished miniature this year myself...  :D
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

I'd go nuts.

Just... remember to go outside and get what few UV rays there are in december, m'kay?

He doesn't have to worry about that... in November we had 13 hours of sunlight in Helsinki.  :?

500 figures painted in 1 year is a good target, 500 a month might be pushing it  :).
I think I will reach 500 figures painted this year reasonably easily, shift work has given me extra time to paint.

I have painted over 100 in a month, but 500 is closer to an annual output for me.  I count from one of my birthdays to the next and having just had one pass, I finished 561 minis in the last year.  It depends a lot on what you are painting.

That sounds like a crazy goal. Good luck!

As for the basing question, can you brush the goo onto the base then plant the figures into it?  Use a wet brush to smooth around the edges of the bases.

Yes, but then the goo would have to act as glue too, and I don't quite trust it that far. As I said, it doesn't dry hard but to a sort of soft rubbery finish.

I fear if I do that I'd have to pull the figures out again after the goo hardens and re-glue them, which takes extra time even if I manage to do without breaking any ankles.

I think I'll try sticking them down in two phases next time.

P.S. This doesn't really impact my UV intake either way -- I'm indoors at work during all the daylight hours anyway.

P.P.S. First daily report is up. http://www.smallcuts.net/blog/?id=1862

The next daily report is up.

I won't blab about the daily updates anymore, but this is somewhat important:
