Rise of the Replicants
« on: September 10, 2008, 10:16:02 AM »
You may have seen the article in the Combat Zone Chronicles here:
http://combatzonechronicles.net/cozoxa/replo.htm
(if you didn't, enjoy reading). Anyway, I made a load of piccies of my replicants and I wanted to share them here since a lot of them didn't make it:

Enjoy! :)
Let me hear the battle cry
Calling on the wind
Let me see the banners fly
Before the storm begins

Do you use a wash to get the blueish tint? I like that; makes them seem more 'steely' somehow than just using standard silvery metals...
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

I wanted something different than just metal, but it's not a wash. It's a basecoat of Tamiya Metallic Blue (over a black undercoat), and then drybrushed by adding silver into the mix. Thanks for the kind words BTW  :)

They look really good , I  got similar results on some GW figures using their blue ink applied in several washes and drybrushed with chainmail and silver.

I recently purchased a can of Army Painter Armour metal spray... I guess a spray undercoat heavily washed with blue, then highlighted (or drybrushed) with Chaimail and silver should do the trick... I have to try that, I have a pack of CCTs in a box, somewhere  ::)

But apparently Tamiya makes metallics - nice to know, as I never purchased the GW metallics back then  :)

BTW:
You can do your own metallics by adding ink to silver. Looks quite nice, and you can have it the shade you like. I haven't tried it with the new matt washes, but it works fine with the old inks.

Nice lighting!

Exactlt what I was going to say, so I'll add " I love the apocalyptic red and yellows. I can just imagine a it all taking place in a blazing city"  :-*

They are great figures. I was tempted to use GW Necrons, but I think these are much better. So, of course is the price  lol

I was going to get some EM4 stuff at the last Triples, but was thrown a curve ball by the unfeasibly large metal dice they had for sale and completely forgot to buy any figures  :(

You distract easily, do you? (wait... look... a nice shiny thing.... *  lol

As for lighting, I think I'm going to buy some of those coloured projectors meant for illuminating the walls of a teenage girl.... or I'll just get some kind of lamp/projector which I can cover with coloured rice paper to provide different effects:

Blue: Night
Blueish green: Under water
Red/orange: Apocalyptic settings, blazing towns, lava areas, alien worlds
Green: Radiation, alien worlds

I really gave the 'night' lighting a lot of thought, and I think blue light will create a sense of darkness. I should probably buy some of those electrical streetlights from Ebay seller everydaygoodz, too...

Thanks for the words about the lighting. I was very pleased with the look of the pictures (especially in the second pic I posted), so I thought it was a shame they didn't make it into the Chronicles. I much prefer a diorama setting for my pictures than a well-lit white box (but that also has to do with my style of painting). For the lighting I used two simple bicycle lights (a red and an orange one). Some better lights would be cool too of course, a blue one for night shots is a great idea! :)

Truly excellent paint job.  First class.

I've seen these figures, and really like them, but the few poses that are available is a bit too limiting for me.  Hopefully they will expand the range.
