Hello chaps

I'm currently trying to get back into the swing of things after a long break. To this end I've started ploughing through some of the old plastic mountain, starting with some Riders of Rohan. Well, I say Riders. They seem to have lost their horses, so let's call them Ramblers of Rohan.

I took a lot longer painting these test pieces than I normally would with a unit as I spent ages faffing about with colours to try and match the feel of the Rohirrim from the films. Proper photos will follow later but these chaps are more or less done. I was surprised at the lack of detail on the faces; I wasn't expecting much from a single piece plastic but the spare definition was quite a shock. These will need to be revisited to bring them up to what I regard as tabletop standard.

I am happy with the cloaks; I went with something slightly more vibrant than the greyish-green of the films. This was done by not using any washes but by a couple of layers of glazes. In retrospect the leather is too brown - the redder one I used for the accents will probably end up being the main one I use for the rest of the chaps.

As you can see, I did my test batch as a Unit of 8 - this is for use with SAGA as well as LOTR; these guys will fill in quite nicely for some Anglo Saxons, I think.

I'll update with the next batch when they're done.

I've also just in the last couple of weeks completed two character miniatures for our D&D game. The first is by Oathsworn miniatures who gave fantastic customer service - full story of their magnificence here: http://critfailure.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/oathsworn.html - and is fabulous Dwarf Fighter:

The second is a lovely little wizard from Midlam Miniatures. In my defense, the player chose the colour scheme for this one. I hate it :)

Thanks for looking - and again, I thoroughly recommend using Oathsworn.

VERY WELL DONE! The Rohan Fellows, Dwarf, & Wizard all painted up BEAUTIFULLY...EXCELLENT bases on the Tolkienites. I think the Wizard, by force of character, is my favorite. Keep the creations coming; I really enjoy your style.

Finished painting Theoden:

his armour is a nightmare to do; my solution is available on the blog if anyone wants it.

With having him done, I could get a shot of the Rohan force as it stands now:

And, while I had the setup, I grabbed a decent shot of my two adventurers:

Very well done Vindice.  They look marvellous.  I like the GW Rohan figures, but found their shield designs almost impossible to paint well.   >:(

Love that dwarf too, and you've done him proud!  Are you using him as Gimli?

I looked at the film and all the shields were faded, scratched and generally tatty so I felt no shame in just Drybrushing and an ink wash. :)

The dwarf is my wife's Dwarf Fighter in our D&D campaign; I do actually have a Gimli kicking around somewhere.

Nice brushwork, despite your misgivings, I think the wizard is excellent,

Your player should be very pleased with him

Agreed about the Wizard also.  Contrasting paint schemes that border on garish when viewed in a larger-than-life picture. often look quite good on the tabletop.

Dragonborn Cleric nearly done:

The source lighting really didn't work, but it's a quick fix. I just hope the player is happy with this one.
