Sauna - Finished / March 13
« on: 31 January 2015, 02:28:13 AM »
I will be modelling a smoke sauna type of building. For those in the know, I guess that means us Finns  ;) smoke sauna is quite familiar concept but rest of you I might need to clarify that it's not a Turkish hamam  :)

As all proper saunas should be, it's located next to a water element (not meaning the conjured type now) and during winter time the said water will be frozen. So there's the ice part. I might include the fire by actually burning the sauna as quite many of smoke saunas go up in flames during some point of their existence  :?  ;)

And here's a plan of some sort of the sauna building itself.

The footprint of actual building will be around 90mm x 50mm but still debating with myself how big the whole piece including a icy pond or part of lake will be in the end.

Cheerio,

finally weekend and some time to spend on this entry.

Theme word for the day is bond, hopefully the following pics enlighten you who might check this out…

First the start, some pine wood:

Then some cutting… the good old Finnish puukko (that's knife in Finnish for you all not in the know) proved to be the best tool in the end:

Then some pondering and then some filing of a test piece:

And then couple of more test pieces to be able to test the bond. Looks like a good start, need to deepen the "cuts" to make the bond sit tighter though:

And now, after this mighty fine start, project on hold as I will go skiing with misses. More updates hopefully by this evening already.

Cheers,

pl

A nice start - I think a few people are going to be stressed in the last week - there's not much time :P

Thanks gents :)

@CB: oh well, maybe it would not be a good idea to hire me to build a real smoke sauna… only maybe if one is after a rustic and old look for it  lol

@von L: yes, I think I will spend many afternoons and evenings with this  o_o

Just finished the logs for the longest wall. Had to file 48 of those holes on the beams… made a quick calculation that I still need to make around 120 more to get all the necessary logs ready  :` And also noticed that I'm short of 91cm of the pine wood so on Monday need to purchase more of it. Well I can always happily file some more and plan the base as it needs finishing too.  :(

Looking good.

I once tried that style of construction - the inter-locking timbers. It almost drove me mad - so good luck with that.

PS.
Interesting knife (the one with the engraving on the blade) what type of knife is this and what do you use it for?

Cheers gents,

@dampfpanzerwagon: I think this one will surely drive me crazy… if not, then hopefully by Monday evening I will have the logs ready to begin assembly. Still need to figure out the roof and chimney, one door and small window for the sauna.

The knife is typical Finnish knife, good for summer cottage, trekking etc outdoor activities, handy e.g. for building a fire as one can have easily small cuts to firewood for fire to start easier and so on. Good for hobby activities as well.

@snitchy: I am patient man to a certain level  lol

Hello gents,

@Dr. Zombie: Yesterday I had my doubts about this, but now I have redefined my method for the logs so hopefully things will speed up a bit. The knife is rather nice indeed, there were old folk beliefs that different handle materials of knifes had different effects, e.g. birch wood gave you protection against evil spirits and so on. And this knife does have birch wood… just in case  lol

@jimbibbly: Had to make individual logs, it wouldn't be proper any other way :) And individual bricks build will follow… at some point. I just want to see your castle project finished first ;)

Here's a pic of test fitting the lowest frame of the build. Still need to do too many of those "holes" to the logs but I just came up with faster solution. By using the knife I can speed up things a bit, if I don't cut myself in the process, that is. First the knife and then bit of file work to tidy up things.

Now again a longer pause, need to go shopping and later if weather permits, skiing. Back to work in the evening :)

So after some shopping and lunch had a time work on this a bit more before soon heading to ski tracks :)

This was the situation around 45 mins ago:

And now at this point. Almost ready to built four full levels, need to "age" the wood first though. So some minor cuts or rough treatment with sandpaper is in place before I glue things permanently:

Since I haven't been too exact with each cut and such, I hope that this building will look like ages old through its stature… if not, there's always the painting stage that can work…if not wonders, but something along that line. Last option is of course burning the whole built :D
