Uniform query...
« on: 05 February 2015, 03:59:08 PM »
Perry Miniatures do British Infantry with what looks like either a blanket or a greatcoat over their shoulders. What is it and what colour should it be, I've seen them depicted as both dark blue and grey, while perusing painted figures on the interweb?

They are the blanket rolls worn by the Yorks and Lancs and Royal Irish Fusiliers in the coastal campaign.

This painting of the Battle of Tamai gives an idea of the colour. Dark grey, by the looks of things...

As the painter, Godfrey Douglas Giles, was actually present at the battle, it seems fair to accept his portrayal as accurate.

Michael Perry painted up a uniform guide for the Sudan, the regiment you talk about in Indian Service gear is represented there:

They are a dark blue grey in Go Strong into the Desert, Mike Snook.

My choice would be to simply mix a bit of blue into a dark grey and highlight up from there.

We must see colours differently then, because in my copy of Mike Snook's book they are practically black, with no hint of blue at all. Perrys have them dark grey, and in the painting done by the man who was there they look dark grey to me too. I don't know where this blue thing is coming from.

Colour is a funny thing.  :)

It must be mu Fine Art degree..... it can make one see funny things  lol

Seriously though, if you look in the Mike Snook's book there is a hint of blue in Michael's depiction of the York and Lancasters.

you have to remember that even dark greys are made up of many colours. It's actually possible to mix a black with a mix of the folowing, Burn't Umber, Viridian and Ultramarine. Of course, one should paint their mini's how they please  :)

I'm thinking of adding a couple of British units in the light blue iniforms. What number Humbrol matt enamal would be the closest match, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I really haven't got a clue about Humbrol! I haven't used Humbrol except for undercoating and the initial coat of varnish in years! I did once gloss some old Napoleonics in Humbrol!! Needless to say it was not a good result!!!  lol

Sorry I can't be pf more help. Next time I'm at the shop where I buy my paints I'll try and do a comparison with Vallejo for you.

Darrell.
