Cheers, mate. Unfortunately, thanks to Disney, I now find it impossible to hear the words Hakuna Matata without thinking of dancing cartoon warthogs. :)

We did actually have some African music in the background for atmosphere when we played our game last week. A Miriam Makeba Greatest Hits album, including this, which is the one that fitted the game the most, I suppose:

Lovely, Plynkes, my dear!

I have to look into this Miriam Makeba Greatest Hits album. I have never heard anything by her but the 'Pata Pata' song.

So you have never heard that most famous of Zulu songs, Mbube?

I am going to bombard you with different versions until you are thoroughly sick of it:

(Miriam)

(Original Version)

(Whiter and lamer)

(Words fail me with this bizarre Austin Powers yodelling version, but I like it)

(Weren't the 80s great?)

Can't end with that tosh, so back to Miriam to finish:

I always liked this one.  She did do a music video for it (I have it on one of my VHS tapes) but, unfortunately, it doesn't appear to be online.

Yes, I have heard that one, but only in neutered Western Euopean and American versions. But, mercy me, in your quest to showcase the worst example of those, you forgot (or honourably ignored) this horrible afterbirth of a glee-club-esqe performance from N'Sync:

h'yuck

I have to say that since I always enjoy seeing a drunken jackass making a fool of himself, I sort of enjoyed that folk song version.

I don't think that you can go too wrong with Ladysmith Black Mambasa as a background and since they are an all male  acapela group you have that great bass section mentioned in Zulu.  I am also very partial to Jaluka but topically these songs are modern still "Woza Friday" or "Bullets for Bafazane" could work in pretty well.

For some reason "Pata Pata" isn't on the album I have (it's called "Africa"), which is odd, as it is probably her best known song. I really like that one, though, and must hunt it down so I have my own copy.

It's a dance that all females should be encouraged to enjoy, too, not just ones "down Johannesburg way." I feel it is important that one's hips, waist and buttocks get sufficient exercise, which this particular dance provides. That's my opinion on the matter, anyway.

The first African group I ever got into was the Bhundu Boys. I still have a long-playing vinyl record of theirs, something of a museum piece these days, I fancy. Unfortunately they are rather under-represented on Youtube, and I couldn't find my favourite, which is called "Shabini."

I do enjoy the choral singing of Ladysmith Black Mambazo too, by the way. Those lads sing so nicely they could be in a Welsh male voice choir.

Here's another version of 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' that's pretty good.

And, of course, probably the most famous one...
