Cilician Pirates - 2 more pirates converted 06/11/17
« on: February 08, 2015, 01:06:16 AM »
As the question says, how does the ancient Cilician pirates would look like?

Any idea, any drawings, description?

Would they be a mix of several people with several equipment/clothes on them?

What type of boats would they use? Liburnias, Birremes ?

hey Rui,

which era, early roman century ?

I think you can take any guy in tunic with a phrygian cap

try the Alix Comics for any ideas. There is 2 special books about Ancient navy.

Eric, the period is Caesar.
The idea is for a small band of pirates to raid some coastal village or town in the Mediterranean.

I would like to see opinions and ideas of figures in here.

Ask Mr Google - Cilician Pirates Images - has some fanciful illustrations including Pirates of the Caribbean!   A few gems amongst all this, my guess is try unarmoured Hellenistic infantry with round or thureos shields, light archers and maybe some wealthy chiefs with assorted armour.   Try mixing in some Carthaginians with armour/shield/javelins.    Add in some 'exotic' trumpets and standards.  Not sure who does Lykian infantry other than 'Battlestandard' in 28mm.

Not sure what scale you are after.

Suspect they would have had fast ships so Biremes and even lighter.   Maybe base this around the Rhodian fleet?    So maybe cut down triremes as well?

At the end of the day it is your party so go with what best suits you.

As your are a specialist with "Green", i think you can :

* Take any figurines in tunic (short sleeves) or bare chest
* with boots (or bare feet) like greek peltast.
* head with phrygian cap (see in Persian troops, Scythian, late roman/saxon infantry, even Thracian peltast) or do it with green.

yes !

The pict could fit the job.

the Irish (?) too.

But now, you must find a way to "easternalize" their look with.....

headband....?  Phrygian cap ?  assyrian style (fringes) tunic....

Paintwork to finish the job and that's it !

Maccabean figurines could fit the job too
