What would you include in a LR knights hospitaller retinue?
« on: 20 February 2015, 11:00:22 AM »
Guys,

I am thinking about a new Lion Rampant retinue and really like the look of knights hospitaller. What would typically be included in a retinue? I am thinking 1 or 2 mounted men at arms, 1 mounted sergeants, 1 unit of yeoman, 1 unit of crossbow. Does this sound about right? I am looking at Fireforge plastics, would it be the templars sets I would buy, or the sergeants, or both? Just trying to get a feel for composition/outlay before I go any further.

Also, if such a force could be used in Crescent and Cross, it would gain bonus points, but don't know anything about that game, so any nuggets of info on this would also be appreciated.

You can find some really nice knights hospitaller blog poasts here, seems like he built most from Fire Forge plastic and use them both for Lion Rampant and SAGA/Crescent and Cross.

This was my second choice for some Lion Rampant Crusaders ( probably a future project)
If you are going to use Fireforge plastics it takes a little planning to avoid having too many "spare" minis.

In Mike's blog above it looks like he has used a "Templar Knights" set to get the 6 barded horses ( which he used for the mounted knights) and 6 unbarded horses (for the Mounted Sergeants) and a "Templar Infantry" set to get the foot Sergeants and crossbowmen.
The foot Knights look like metals.
Nice balanced retinue for the cost of two boxed sets of plastics and some metal foot knights.

Personally, I would go for one Mounted MAA unit, and two of Mounted Serjeants, to better reflect the elite nature of the knights who were full brothers in the Order. I'd also upgrade the Foot Yeomen to Foot Serjeants but the Crossbows seem right enough.

If I've worked it out properly, that would give you 2 points left over to spend on either a unit of Bidowers for some scouting and skirmishing flank protection, or a couple of units of Serfs to represent feisty pilgrims and/or screening units (i.e. Speedbumps).

Unfortunately I don't know how that would fit in with your plans to get everything out of as few Fireforge boxes as possible.  :?

Thanks for the image, don't know much about the order, most of my googles turn up images of knights in black robes, so the red was a little surprise.
