The Cider Press - a very special anniversary tutorial

Dampf's Modelling Page is seven years old today and to commemorate the event I have uploaded part one of a scratch-built project called the Cider Press.

It looks lovely - but I'm confused how this works. Is it for cider the drink or some sort of torture device? The French are weird.

(Okay, I just don't get how the fruit stays in place - all other cider presses have a bucket for the apples/fruit).

Never mind - Google image search came up with the good. The fruit is kept in some sort of flat sacks.

The press is used to de-juice the apple pulp.

The pulp is kept in layers - wood - sacking - wood layers -sacking etc.

The screw press will press down on the wooden packing pieces and then the layers.

The juice will run out onto the main wooden board and then into a bowl, cask or container.

There is a very similar press at the Bulmers Museum in Hereford.

Never tried it, can't get it here!  

Cider has only been a thing here recently and a lot of the local offerings just taste of apple juice and alcohol, not proper dry cider. So while I'm sure that Strongbow is just mass-market stuff to those who have genuine selection, it's all I've had for years. The berry and pear ones are even worse! Bleah!

Actually recently I did finally find one other that was decent like Strongbow (though not clearly superior or anything); some South African brand called Safari.

Er, uh, anyway, uhm, how about those miniatures.

Jon (jp1885),sent me a pm with a link full of rural machinery and this press was in amongst them as he thought I might have a bash at a few pieces.thank god you've posted I knew I'd seen a really well made one,somewhere. But for the life of me I couldn't remember where..It's been driving me nuts
