Yes, probably the best course of action, although I think I can yet get closer to a better match  :)

So, while I'm waiting for the right colour fine turf to arrive, I decided to crack on and paint the caves and the escarpment...

Here's the whole thing coming a little more together now.

Despite using the same paints as on the original donga terrain, I haven't quite got the colour of the cliffs the same. Not quite as yellow-brown. They will need a wash or two to blend them in with the originals.

Truthfully, although slight differences in paint colour seem quite striking on the bare groundwork, the addition of grass, scrub, tufts, bushes and foliage will tie everything together and largely conceal any tonal differences in the colours of the hard surfaces. Which is why it's important to get the colour of the grass matched as closely as possible.

Pending arrival of grass supplies, the next job is to make a start on the lid...  :)

Lovely.
The tonal variation in the rockwork looks top drawer.

Splendid work Richard  :-* :-*

I wouldn't worry too much about the tonal difference, it looks like the sediment changed colour half way up  ;)

cheers

Looks good.

One suggestion that might make things easier is if you extended the paint along the top slightly, mainly because I've dealt with a similar type of cave setup that someone else did (Meaning the removable roof only with it) and unless you have interlocking pieces to lock them together and hold them in that position, a slight increase in painted area along the top goes a long way in keeping the appearance correct even if it isn't being put back precisely right each time such as when both the top and tunnels are in use.

And now, the beginnings of the lid...
I needed to make sure the front edge of the cave system lid fitted exactly along the irregular line of the escarpment. I therefore made a template from newspaper, cut to shape.

Then transferred this to the underside of a new styrofoam slab...

Marked it out...

And cut to size and shape using the hot wire cutter.
Hey presto.

There is obviously a lot of work to be done on this section now - it needs cutting down and shaping in some places, and building up to heights in others. That's the next job...  :)
