15mm WW2 eastern front, work in progress
« on: March 15, 2015, 12:30:22 PM »
Hi,

In this topic I'll show my work concerning figures and scenery for 15mm ww2 gaming. I'll start with german and russian "middle war" platoons. here's the first german squad, painted for testing purposes :

thank you !

The figures were better before the bad varnish I applied on (causing white traces and dots I tried to fix the best I could)  ::)

So I ordered a new product, vallejo premium polyurethane varnish. Apparently, it's very good, very sturdy, and compatible with polyethylene (so I also plan to use it as a soft plastic minis primer  8)).

These are from Forged in Battle. They were affordable, and organized in platoon packs, wich was very convenient considering my WW2 knowledge  lol

Very nice painting - your translation of how you paint 20mm to 15mm shows, and has paid off nicely.

thank you all for the comments, as usual, as an isolated hobbyist, I appreciate to share feedback and ideas online about our hobby !

Concerning varnish, I just understood what was my mistake this morning : I achieved a GREAT varnish on my modern africans, and I was thinking that I have used the same product I used on the germans ! But on the africans, I used a artistic spray varnish, really, really good product, and I don't know why, I confused it with this crappy old varnish bottle  lol

Next time I'll go with this spray can varnish, since the result is nothing less than impressive (really flat, and really respecting constrats and colors on minis). I will probably mostly use the vallejo premium varnish as a soft plastic primer, but I will also test it as brush on varnish.

Now I came back on the french modern project, waiting for my new paints order delivery.

Hi,

Back on this project, I finally choosed to go for a bigger french game called "Blitzkrieg", instead of a single based skirmish setup. The reason is that I already have 2 skirmish setups : portuguese bush wars and french modern. I wanted something more "massbattle". Blitzkrieg has 2 major advantages : it's a french game (even if I read english, it's always simplier in french), and it uses some kind of abstraction to represent the combat groups, so you don't need a lot of figures to play company games.

So I will have to rebase my german, but to keep my motivation I choosed to go with a russian force and come back to germans later.

So I started building some bases with PVC (I still have to round some corners on a few of them), and started to sort my russian figures (15mm forged in battle). Enough to build 2 infantry companies in the Blitzkrieg format, with a couple of political officers stands, and a few spare LMGs.

I also started learning airbrushing, painting 2 armoured vehicles, a T34 and a ISU 152. These are resin vehicles from Gaming Models, wich were perfect to practice. Preparation work was minimal, I usually take more time to prepare my resin models, but I have to admit that I was lazy and just wanted to start airbrushing    ;)

With the airbrush, I painted a primer coat (vallejo polyurethane), then a pre shading (revell black green) and then, main color (vallejo model russian green). Here's the result at this stage :

Then, I made some highlight with soft drybrushing. I should have painted a zenital pre-lighting with the airbrush, since 100% drybrush highlight is a bit crude. I'm learning after all   lol  Here's the current stage :

Then today I painted the markings and numbers, and I airbrushed a coat of Klear to protect the paint job, for further weathering :

I choosed to brush paint red star and stuff, since I didn't have decals. I could have make my own (I have some special paper for it), but it would have take a few days to be ready. Since these are "practice" tanks, it was faster this way.

I also broke the T34 barrel   >:(  so I fixed it, and I 'm currently repainting it.

Great job on the painting. That freehand is fantastic.  :-* I had trouble telling whether it was decals or not!

Looking forward to see all that lead stuck down too. :)

Concerning freehand detailling, I practiced a lot with miniature football figures, painting tiny shoulder numbers, jersey stripes and helmet logos  lol
