I prime in grey or white (depending on what's in store in the carpaint shop) and then paint black with a brush in all the places where I'll want the blacklining/shadows. Best of both worlds and works well for me. :)

I know it is possible to get really bright colors over a black primer, but it's not possible for me.  So I use white for brighter look, grey or dark brown when the figure is mainly earth tones, and black for anything else.

I was using black for pretty much everything until earlier this year when I was painting some old AD&D gnomes, and just couldn't get the clean, "cold" look I wanted.  Stripped and switched to white primer and was much happier with the results.

I almost always use a grey undercoat. Gives a more realistic luminosity I find...never use black! BLACK! WHATS FOR TEA MOTHER? MORE OF YOUR LIES?!

For any who dont get this check out Johnny Nice Painter on you tube. Its from a 90s comedy show from the UK called the fast show.

I used to prime white or black in my youth and now have moved on to grey, black and auburn.

My best practise for grey primer is to forst drybrush the whole mini in white or ink it in black. I even mix both techniques for different areas. If you thin down your coulors and paint over white white brushed areas you get an instant shading.  ;) Grey basecoat is my personal colour of choice for quickpainting and any fantasy figure with not to much flesh exposed.
Far less active than I used to...
