How early is your VSF?
« on: 10 April 2015, 08:21:54 PM »
With all these gorgeous new mid-19th Century miniatures on the market I was wondering how early people are wargaming VSF?

My earliest VSF units are based around the ACW due to the G.A.S.L.I.G.H.T. supplement 'Journals of Victoria Hawkes'.

There are photos here of my ACW-VSF Units:

Mine has always been 1890s to turn of the century but it is sometimes tempting to go earlier...

I've been thinking of a VSF game concept based in the 21st century or later ....

I game it through the whole 19th century
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it anymore and what is it seems weird and scary.

I'm gaming 1880's but I do use figs from earlier periods. Some converted and some like the 1840's,1860's can fit in well enough given the right background and context. Nothing like an overblown fancy uniform on the table or deck of a cloudship.  "Was that more gold braid you wanted Sir?"  lol

They work best for non conventional units or private armies.

I have a number of troops that I use. Some of them are from the 1860s ACW & Maximillian in Mexico stuff. I also use my French, Russians, & Brits from the 1880s. And a lot of various Boxer rebellion troops from 1900.

I class the 'VSF era' being between 1854 and 1885...this allows me to include ACW stuff and of course it ends with the introduction of khaki...British VSF troops cant wear khaki  :)!

Cheers!

I guess it's not actually VSF, but I've done some early SciFi games based in the American Revolution - Ben Franklin's War:

As well as some ancient Roman scifi, Res Mechanica:

I've been intrigued by a possible Crimean War VSF, but haven't actually had anything to try out.

Alas, we're of the 'we'll have red coats even if it's Zulu wars' mentality, for the most part. Strict temporal attribution is tricky at best.

I haven't done anything concrete yet, but I've been thinking of VSF/Steampunk Napoleonics.

Maybe a "Sharpe's Steam Company"-kinda thing.

American Civil War because I already had 25mm's for playing Brother Vs. Brother and, being cheap, only had to add a few things to do VSF

Now that few things has grown to about a hundred :D

Most of my toys are around the 1860-1880 era.
