Question About Rocky Outcrops
« on: April 20, 2015, 06:46:40 PM »
Hello all,

What colour stone would you recommend so that a rocky outcrop fits both temperate and desert areas? I was thinking either a sandstone colour or grey over rich red, like in the old GW terrain guides for LOTR.

KR,
Matt M

I'll go for a darker sandstone.

That would seve for North America, Egypt, Middle east, AND by just adding some bases of appropriate folliage, may do for jungle, european, etc.

Hope that helps.

It does, thank you. I finished sealing the rocks tonight, so hopefully I'll have enough for a sparse 4x4 table by the end of the week.

The short answer is whatever looks good to you.

Deserts are rarely solely a product of their geology. I've seen red, orange, volcanic black, every shade of grey and brown and off white in arid or desert settings. Really it's a matter of aesthetics and conforming to popular visual tropes. A warm sandstone is a good choice but the key is how you blend the terrain edges into the surrounding terrain.

That's what I went for in the end. They should feature in an AAR by the end of the week.  :)
