I guess going with plastics they have to do something that is guaranteed to sell onside ring the startup costs. I think they still look quite original (not the marine types).  Not my cuppa though. If they had gone metal or resin they could have had a more out there starter set but that's not really what people expect from a starter set is it. Which is a shame.

I really like their terrain sprue idea.   Greebles for whatever boxes or structures you want to use ( gift boxes, junction boxes, sorting bins, etc)

Unfortunately it's not clear that when it is unlocked if there will be a terrain-only pledge.
From an email update i got today...

$12 a sprue.

"The Maelstrom's Edge Plastic Terrain Sprue is Now Available!

We are pleased to announce that it is now possible to get the Maelstrom's Edge plastic terrain sprue on its own! The sprue looks like this:

and allows you to build awesome buildings like this one by simply taking the elements and gluing them on to card, foamcore or whatever else you have around, then painting it:

You can pre-order your sprues at http://www.maelstromsedge.com/ks and you can see even more examples here. We'll be adding more sprue add-ons over the coming weeks, so if you see anything you like, be sure to jump in so that you dont miss anything!"

Interesting how this has kinda stalled at 37k.  They have upped the amount of stuff in the core pledge as well, including adding robots.  Hopefully they are not overextending themselves.

The robots will get some attention.  Definitely "stuff" worth the $90 now, but still zero interest from me.  I'd like to see the robots up close as kit-bashing potential, but not nearly enough to go after the KS.

Good to see them ramping up what you get.

I'm in pretty much the same boat.  They've definitely upped the contents and made it "worth it".  Unfortunately I'm not wowed enough to want the game, and the terrain sprues just aren't enough of a bargain to make me order them separately.

I do hope they do well though.  It's a nice package with enough original ideas to add some variety to the current game selection.

There was a minor boost from the added stuff but they don't actually seem to have broken out of the midproject doldrums. Looks like they are avoiding catching the withdrawal fewer so far tho, but OTOH the extra content may come to bite them in the hindquarters a week or two down the line when folks notice the (probable) lack of progress. Meaning that peeps may start to expect another big "auto-add-on" and get disappointed when it doesn't come o_o

I've been watching this on Dakka and just can't seem to get excited about it.  I hope they have smashing success, but the minis just don't grab my attention.
This is my boomstick!

Looks "blah" to me... Terrain sprue has the most potential in my eyes, and even then I'm not sure I care enough to pay £8 a sprue (especially after what Mantic released for Deadzone).  :?

The story and background also seem rather half-baked to me (although, to be fair, I guess it's hard coming up with an original story for why so many factions are fighting each across a galaxy all the time).

Last couple of days on the KS, and Dakka's started to spam it's own forum. A big ol' picture advert has been added onto the end of each topic in the place, never mind how little any given topic has to do with it.

It's mildly irritating.

I looked at this again to see if the terrain were worth pledging for, but honestly, if I pay for terrain sprues I don't want to have to find some boxes to glue crap on.  I want full terrain ready to stick together and paint.  The mantis crap is very samey after the first 2 or 3 buildings one makes.  I left the rest of mine unbuilt and am not sure eye will ever get finished.  This terrain looks to have a similar functionality.  The big mechs in this KS look pretty good for generic SF but, I have a couple of dollar store toys that literally are more detailed and look very much like these.  I really wanted to help these guys, but it is all rather blah.

And you're right those spam ads on Dakka are way OTT.

Mantic's terrain and other similar endeavors (Maki Games comes to mind as a recent comparison) of course suffer from the fact that while they come with a lot of plastic it's only made up of a few different parts. That's fine if you are going for a suburban prefab building look but not otherwise. ME terrain sprue or two might liven things up a bit but I'd prefer them to be a little cheaper, given they are basically just for dressing up and not making complete constructions.

---

It's mildly irritating
For some reason, the entire "[insert ME stuff here] is the best ever for this genre, or even even better" attitude is galling me with this project. Could be they are just being a wee too blatant about compared to others.

I like the terrain sprues as a quick way to make simple boxes look like terrain easily. Problem is for the price there is MDF terrain you can get for a not much more that is the complete package.

Lots of people over at Dakka seem frustrated by the advertising.

The problem is, that for the same money you can but other games' sprues that either make a complete building outright, or which can be used as greebles.

Add in your astute comment on MDF buildings, and I fail to see much point/time/money saving in offering modest greeble sprues at £8 each.

If/when the robots come out separately I could see myself getting them for 15mm, same for the drones, other then that, its just another generic 28mm sci fi setting.

I still have figures from that other company and occasionally pick up a box; the biggest draw being the well established background or theme, and supporting content (books, computer games, audios etc).

In the final hours and it's at $60k.
A respectable showing, but I wonder if the creators consider that a success?   Obviously they have already funded some of the plastic figs out of their own pockets, but I'm not sure if 60k is enough to fund the rest of the models and game components and if it's enough of a showing to get picked up for distribution.

Don't want to be a Debbie downer, I do hope everything works out for them.
