Sorry if I sounded harsh about the first Sov.

Not at all! No offence taken in the slightest. If I didn't want commentary I wouldn't be posting things on the internet. Hell, If I can endure CMON scores I can take anything.

In all truth though, my painting has improved in countless ways down the years from posting on the net and getting good feedback.

After talking about ugly sculpts we love, I've been looking again at my Slaughterloo stuff. They're such cuddly sculpts... No. Must stay focused.

Mongoose Dredd scales well with Foundry Dredd in my opinion.  The style is a little different, but close enough for my purposes.  This photo is a mix of both Foundry and Mongoose.

And what are the mongoose JD rules like?

Core rules are solid and fun.  The campaign rules are shakier, but there is fun to be had for sure.

Thanks.  I have a post apocalyptic town terrain set ("Standard Falls") that is quite large, but needs a few more landmarks and some half decent photos.  It looks a bit like this:

I have been working on some urban sci-fi terrain with Dredd at the forefront too, you can see some of the bits of it in images like this:

More photos of the terrain to come later in the year, when I clear a few other projects off the desk.

Great thread - I am currently re-reading my entire 2000Ad collection, so this is very topical for me.

I aso have a stack of the old Citadel stuff painted up but was wondering about the newer Mongoose sculpts. I will watch this thread with great interest.

Thanks to everyone who has got involved in discussing this undertaking so far.  I am really enjoying the project a lot and the feedback combined with the tag team approach makes it feel different to my other painting projects

Judgement Day #5: Former Judge Rico Dredd

Rico was Judge Joe Dredds clone brother.  Like many fictional twins, he turned out to be a bad sort.  Joe put Rico away for twenty years hard labour on Titan (where all inmates are bionically modified to perform the required ).  Rico did his twenty, came back to Mega City One to get revenge and Joe killed his clone brother in a shootout.

The model is a nice clean design that matches the various comic book interpretations of the character throughout the years pretty well, without being slavish to it.  The scheme that I painted the model in did similar: its not an exact match but it is pretty recognisable to anyone with an interest in the Dredd strip I think.

The blog post for Rico is HERE.

My next model (up in a fortnight) will be another generic, rather than named "historical" MC1 type.  Its Mr Saturday up next Monday though, Im not sure what he has planned.

Considering his brief tenure, Rico is one of my favourite Dredd characters. You've done a great job on him. I see the terrain is coming along very nicely too, liking the ugly clinic signage.

Nice job Paul! I think the model could've had a better face sculpt. It's especially lacking in the hair department if you ask me. This is the pic I think of when I think Rico, and I don't think it maps to the mini.

Thanks.  I plan to sort out some proper posts on the terrain later in the year, as I have a lot more almost finished.  Details then.  I am pleased with how it is working out.

Yeah, its peculiar how much weight the character has.  Rico is significant, if not particularly memorable.

Thanks, I do enjoy trying to set up silly MC1 scenes to put these guys in for photos.  Its not perfect, but its constantly improving, which is very pleasing.  The modular signage is working out well, I might try to rope in some of your mad graffix skillz for some particular signs soon.  A Shapiros, some Sump products, Munce products, Emphatically Yess... there are many to plunder and they add a desirable je ne sais quoi to the areas where I imagine my toy soldiers shooting at each other.

How about that?  Hairy enough for you now Mattias? ;)

You are correct, the fright-wig hair in the original story is quite different to how it is shown on the model.  The hair was depicted as a little floppier in later illustrations though.

You will note that the bionics on the models face are definitely not an exact match for the illustrations, which are constant in their representation of that.  An exact match would be preferable for a subject like this.  All the same, I am content to have a model that fits the vibe of the character.  Its a distinct feature of the 2000AD and particularly Judge Dredd "house" style that many varied interpretations of things like the hardware, vehicles and uniforms appear, all equally valid.  I am happy to apply that logic to an almost mythic character like Rico.

Note that I am aware that much of that paragraph above sounds like a load of self-deluding stomm, but honestly thats how I feel about it.  Time ticks by and this will be my first and last Dredd miniatures project: Im not going to let minutiae hold me back.  Except when I feel massive nerd rage about the number of links in Dredds badge chain or something equally vital ;)

Thanks all for the feedback :)

This week Judge Alexandrov and his Krashnikov 97 carbine join my Sovs, laying down sheets of East Meg 1 justice for the proletariat.

I like this sculpt, the gun has a nice heft to it, though I think he could do just adjusting the strap to take a tad more of the weight. Alexandrov has a little more Dredd-centric base work done, with a smashed Mega City One judge helmet at his feet, (from the Mongoose SJS judge's base). I have three Sovs complete now, not too far from a playable force.

Those reds are the business. I like the comic book style weathering on the weapon too.

Nice.
