How do you paint your roads/terrain bases?
« on: 11 May 2015, 04:16:02 AM »
I just got a large number of Napoleonic houses/villages from Leven and Total Battle Miniatures, and have started making terrain again to work with these amazing pieces.

Years ago I got quarts of paint to match the standard "Beastial Brown / Graveyard Earth / Bleached Bone" Games Workshop method of painting, but I never liked the jump to the Bleached Bone color. It seemed to radical to me.

Now I have a handful of hedgerows and roads sitting with the first two base colors on, but I don't want to give them their third color without checking with you all.

Note: I mainly use Apple Barrel-type cheap craft paints for my terrain, so I have a TON of options in front of me...

Try some khaki brown. An old name for a GW-colour, just between graveyard and bleached. Same in Vallejo GameColour: khaki, 72061

When painting simple earth bases I got two ways
charred brown, graveyard, khaki, bleached as a cold earth colour set
charred, terracotta, vermin, bronzed flesh as a warm set

I always use khaki since it is not as harsh as a standard white or ivory colour.  It gives you a more subtle transition in ground cover.

For the final highlight I actually use Magnolia household emulsion paint, it is a warm very pale pink, but needs to be drybrushed on fairly lightly. For more arid terrain I drybrush it more heavily. In both cases it is a more gentle transition than white.

My other earth colours are also emulsion paint mixes I had done at the local DIY store, lasted ten years so far ;)

You could just mix some of the Graveyard Earth and Bleached Bone paints that you had matched to give a more subtle transition - start with a 50:50 mix and adjust till you get something you like.
