Fighting Season Preview
« on: May 13, 2015, 11:10:50 AM »
Further to taking advice on how to post this here, I'm having a go!

As some of you will be aware, we are developing a set of rules for using Chain of Command for modern conflicts such as Iraq or Afghanistan.  We have a full game report on Lard Island News, here:  http://toofatlardies.co.uk/blog/?p=3773

Here are a couple of shots from the game.

For those interested, we also regularly post on Twitter with live action games.  You can find us at #toofatlardies or search for our hashtag #spreadthelard

Hopefully I won't end up clapped in irons in some Lead Adventure dungeon for this and have complied with the rules!

Cheers

Rich

We don't have facilities for that sort of thing... it's 'Lead Adventure'' as in metal figures, not leashes... we may have a member or two who might have some links to PM you though.
 >:D

No, seriously that's fine. Alles en ordnung, weitermachen.  :)

Thanks for posting this Rich, I've been following the rules development with interest. I think i'll almost certainly pick this up.

Would anyone be able to explain the basics behind CoC dice system for me? I think i'm missing a lot of the intricacies behind the battle report at the moment.

Also, bit of a random question but I was looking through Lard Island at some of the terrain you have built - very impressive indeed. Can anyone point me in the direction of a blue insulation foam supplier? I've had a look around my local Wickes and B&Q but no joy there.

Pete

In what respect? I'm loathe to dive in and make the system sound way more complicated than it actually is.
 :)

In essence though, unit activation is via command dice... the more efficient a force's C3, the more dice. The better the rolls, the more things you can activate per phase.

Rather than mere random unit activation, where you can move whatever you like, the rolls represent leaders having to multi-task and deal with distractions, while at the same time trying to command their subordinates and elements.

Sounds complicated but really isn't. There are a set of videos on YouTube showing CoC game play and do a much better job than I could.

Oh, this looks really good. I'm intimidated by the thought of painting modern camouflage in 28mm or smaller, though.

I am very excited about this. It looks like it is going to do everything I want form a Modern rules set, while still being both fun and challenging to play. I like the way the insurgents play. How easy will it be to create new army-lists for fictitious conflicts/forces?

Does it work as well for more symmetrical engagements (cold war gone hot sort of thing).
Theres more 28mm Superhero Madness at my blog, http://fourcoloursupers.blogspot.com/
And for Ultra-modern Wargaming check out Hotel Zugando at http://ultramoderngaming.blogspot.co.uk/

that's what I would like to know.  :D
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

Hi gents,

I'm afraid FS is built literally from the ground up for platoon-level post 2001 asymmetric warfare, specifically covering operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. I personally believe that a rules set needs to have a pretty narrow focus if its to immerse the player in the chosen period so we've kept it intentionally tight. "Playing the period..." and all that.

I do have some vague intentions to look at both 1990s Chechnya and Somalia at some point and most likely the Soviet-Afghan War- FS will be a good springboard but even these will still require significant development to ensure the elusive "period feel".

For 1980s fictional Fulda Gap stuff there's another CoC supplement in the development works called Red Dawn which may suit your needs a little better.

As far as lists in FS are concerned again its all based around those two theatres so I guess if your fictional combatants happened to be hill tribesmen with a love for roadside bombs you might be in luck ;). Rich Clarke may well release the FS CoCulator as he has for WW2 CoC which would allow you to stat up your own forces to some degree but that's still someways down the track.

Hope this is of some assistance.

cheers,

Leigh

... well someone had to say it.  ;)

Red Dawn development is covered here. There's a couple of AARs etc.

I shall be playing Red Dawn for the first time at Deep Fried Lard in Edinburgh in a couple of weeks time. Very much looking forward to it. I shall report back here.

Cheers
