Ancient Greek Heavy Cavalry.
« on: May 19, 2015, 05:44:59 PM »
I got a unit of 1st Corps Greek heavy cavalry last weekend. When it comes to painting 'em do the reins and harness want to be natural leather, or do they want to be greens, reds, blues and wotnot?

???

As cavalry tend to be 'well off' (horses are not cheap) I should think that colours would be likely. I think there's some evidence for Macedonians using matched colour kit for cavalry units, I shouldn't think Greeks would be far behind in following if not originating that concept. During the Alexandrian period I believe that fancy Persian patterned saddle covers were popular too!

Cheers

I'd go with coloured reins.

Thanks for that chaps, I'm leaning toward coloured reins to add a bit more colour to proceedings.

Working on the theory that there's no such thing as a daft question... did Greek Cavalrymen sometimes carry two swords into battle?

???
