I advise you to take a base color for a couple of of tones light a real base color. And inflict spots dark green. Slightly darker reality.
Visually, should get a good balance and contrast.
Simply train yourself even on paper this technique of painting.

Great start to the Modern Russian uniform.
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

I was thinking for colours:
Base: Vallejo green grey (or another light pale green)
Dark Green spots: Vallejo German camo dark green
Brown spots: German camo medium brown
Black: Vallejo Black grey or just black

I reckon the blister pack sponge technique could work quite well. Maybe start with the brown and black spots then do the green over the top so that the brown and black are a little more subtle and not too over-represented. Thoughts?

It seems to me that the black and brown colors are absolutely unnecessary.
Here are reduced to a size 54 mm figure. You see black and brown?

You see black and brown?

Yes, I see a spray of brown dots just below the collar of the foreground figure.

Do I pass the eye test?
Back from the dead, almost.

I think it would be worth it for a little bit of visual interest. Hence why I'd start with the brown/black and then finish with the dark green over the top so that its not overdone and most of it would be obscured

I have great interest look at the figures, painted by you. I think to do such work will be impossible while retaining the impression of a real uniform ...

I bought a ton of them to go with the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. setting (suedo post-apocalyptic/ occult Chernobyl). I haven't managed to paint many though, and well the first one I did paint is wearing a Gorka (I was reading another thread on this board at the time) instead of the standard Russian camo.

That and he's wearing a British gas mask, but again put that down to the setting. I'll be painting up actual soldiers at some point however, so this thread's helpful.

As people seem to be in the know about this, do the Russians have other colours schemes for their modern outfit? I mean like desert, winter, urban, etc? Not to thread jack, but I'd like to have the twenty odd models I have in a variety of schemes to represent the lack of uniformity of the different individuals chucking about the setting.

That and what gas mask are the Russians currently using in military service, and is it available in 28mm at all? I know they have those welding mask visor things for their special forces, but it'd be nice to slip in some gas masks too (though given that you can barely find Russians at all this may be a tall order).

I found this link the other day that has uniforms from around the world. The russian ones are about 3/4 the way down the page.
