... or, Chris finally "got" what is great about Doctor Who.

Seriously, as noted before on various occasions, despite being a huge Sci-Fi nut, I never quite understood the fascination people harbour for Doctor Who (although I instantly loved the Daleks when I first encountered them in a 1993 issue of Model and Collectors' Mart magazine on my first voyage to the UK). I blame it on the first "proper" contact being a number of out-of-order episodes of the Sixth Doctor being the only ones aired in Germany.

Nonetheless, back when I was living in the UK, I got a couple of the magazine plastic Daleks "just in case", and sometime earlier this year, the penny finally dropped, helped by the release of the Seventh Doctor in a proper DVD edition. It may be a sign of me getting old, but it ties in nicely with my increasing sense of 1960s/70s pseudonostalgia, and what with an increasing number of useful figures coming out over the years, I set out to do a Doctor Who project.

I'll be using the DWMG rules with a variety of miniatures, the first of which you may have seen over the course of this year's LPL season. Some more stuff will feature at a later time, but I will also show some minis which won't be part of the remaining LPL rounds.

Do not expect stringent continuity, since I'll happily mix-and-match whatever Who stuff I happen to like. None for the purists, this one.

Pics, now, or it didn't happen!

First off, I painted the lot of Daleks I had lying around since 2010. I opted for a scheme inspired by the fun-looking Cushing Who films since I wanted to try out metallics combined with translucent paint (more on that later) and because it made painting the hemis much easier.

Blue squad:

Red squad:

Specialists - two engineers, Black Dalek, support dalek with twin blasters:

The Emperor, inspired by the TV21 comic version:

Moving on beyond Skaro, a squad of Time Commandos:

A grumpy group of Sontarans:

And finally, four Autons, which didn't quite work out as planned - may strip and redo them at a later time:

That's it for starters. I've still got a couple of factions lined up which I will feature at a later time, and am planning to do some Sci-Fi and 1960s/70s London terrain pieces, which, although generic enough to be used in other settings, should have a definitive whovian slant to them.

Thanks for looking, comments and questions welcome!

Welcome to the incurables ward, Chris!

Love the minis.  The Blue and Gold Daleks remind me of the ones that came with the "War of the Daleks" boardgame way back (see here - http://confessionsofwho.blogspot.co.uk/2010/10/war-of-daleks.html for pictures [not my blog, by the way]).
Back from the dead, almost.

Those Daleks look fantastic. Colour schemes work so well on all of them.  :-*

Brilliant - the Autons look different, but in my opinion seem better than the ones on the show! Leave them as they are! 8) 8) 8)

Well then, time for some more stuff!

First, a couple of Dalek Robomen based on the Cushing movie version:

Next, a trio of Bobbies/Peelers/Coppers plus a veeery basic London cab.

More pics on Sunday - a new piece in the LPL and some closer shots of this round's Daleks.

Awesome work.   Considering all the various Dalek timelines and stories, I think you can easily hand wave the minis.  I personally painted mine from colors seen in the Cushing movies and the Daleks comic strips.  They look great anyway and I love the emperor conversion!  Can't wait to see more.
This is my boomstick!

Some great stuff there. Especially love your Dalek & Emperor & the Robomen. I went with the Cushing film version of Robomen too - much better than the TV version of men wandering around in '60s clothing with giant pans on the heads!

Excellent Chris.
You are going to have quite a collection by the end of the LPL!

They are all superb Chris! I have a soft spot for the Cushing films too. Love the FedSec/UR head conversion - they were designed very much with this in mind ;)

They certainly do! I picked War of the Daleks up at a Jumble Sale when I was about 10. It had half the parts and no instructions - no idea how it works to this day!

I like both.  The movie versions certainly look stylish, but the Tv version has a grim logic.  Why bother making uniforms for disposable humans when you can just stencil a serial number across their existing clothes?  Incidentally, I've been making notes for a forthcoming Doctor Who 1964-65 project (to begin when I've finally cleared enough space to work in), and those clothes, while 1960s-ish in general cut and shape, differ in detail - jackets shaped like those for a lounge suit but without collars, for example, and shirts with stand-up collars fastened at the side with two small buttons.  It was in the movie that (non-robotised) humans simply wore mid-20th century clothes.

Anyway, more nice work with blacks and navy blues there, Chris.  And that taxi looks just right.  But is there any chance of some bigger photos?

This is shaping up to be a monumental Doctor Who thread. So many cool things, and coming at such a fast pace. Always something new to look at.

If anyone gets to nitpick about First Doctor era Doctor Who, it's Steve F. We all remember his first season thread,  I mean first series thread, right? http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=35262.0
