Tutorials for painting hotwheels cars?
« on: 07 June 2015, 04:31:03 PM »
I bought into the Devil's run KS and would like to try doing some hotwheels conversions but have no idea hot to go about painting them. I have plenty of weathering tutorials at hand, but how do you prep the cars and prime them? Do decals need to be removed? Any particular primer work better than another or other handy materials required?

Thanks for the pointers!

I've just started on this journey myself. I've seen that some people strip the cars, but I just stuck bits on and spray primed it as I usually would with Humbrol Grey Matt Primer. The results can be seen in a post on this part of the forum.

Edit: It may be worth stripping the paint in some cases to bring out the casting detail. There's a handy video linked on the first page of 6milphil's thread.

Google "painting hot wheels cars" and find some vids. I warn you though if you think the gaming world can be odd sometimes you're on the planet WTF69 with some of them...

I started by grinding off the paint where I was adding bits but after a couple of cars I dont worry, and just undercoat them. A lot of hotwheels vehicles dont have great details so stripping them doesnt make a lot of difference IMHO

FWIW, I lightly sanded down the paint on one hot wheel, chucked it in the Dettol and the paint cam of very nicely, unfortunately, the transparent plastic 'glass' parts also dissolved! Be warned...

if you are looking for the burnt out affect on wrecks - dip them in white spirit and light them up...
