Affun's Pulp Stuff - A Captain (31/8-15)
« on: June 22, 2015, 12:09:29 AM »
Heya

I recently picked up the Pulp Alley ruleset with the intention of using it for Rogue Trader-ish skirmish games, inspired by the brilliant stuff of Sho3box (Linky), but was distracted within a few seconds of opening up the booklet.

Orders where placed on copplestone castings, and rules and forums were read. I even got in my first game, a 3 player Smash and Grab - which was a bunch of fun, even though I got myself absolutely trashed (I had to essentialy teach myself the rules, while introducing the system to my two flatmates. At least, that's my excuse).

At any rate, I am very much excited with the rule set, and the idea of playing some proper "pulp" games, and have finally made a start towards the first of my leagues. Thus, allow me to introduce my leader, Komvsvoda Katya (name pending):

The varnish isn't entirely dry, and I might want to pick another colour for the cigar, but over all I am very happy with how the mini turned out. Was great fun to paint - Mark Copplestone is a favourite sculptor of mine, so being able to use his Back Of Beyond sculpts are another bonus of gaming Pulp Alley.

I wanted to get a bit of red in there to really hammer home the Soviet theme, as well as to provide some colour to a otherwise quite muted scheme. I think it works pretty well.

I'll get a better picture tomorrow, when I have painted another mini.
Thanks for reading!

Thanks y'all :)

great job! I like her expression

One of the reasons I love Copplestone sculpts - They always have great faces. :)

***

I took another picture, which I think shows off the colours and highlights a bit better:

And here's a picture of the entire league (obviously a work in progress):

The idea is that the Komvsvoda is a sort of foreign affairs agent, hiring local muscle when required so that her acts cannot be traced directly to the Soviet state. Thus, we see her accompanied by a cadre of chineese mercenaries here:

The mysterious Yao - a wandering warrior, proficient with both his trusty shotgun and his blade
Daya - Aggresive and a little bit mad, wielding a dangerous looking blade.
Ming - A cool and collected marksman.
'Grub' - A dog trained for combat.

I'm not too sure about the sidekick (Yao). I don't think the miniature fits too well with the rest, even though the strawhat ties him together with Daya. I might swap him out for something else.
I'll propably be making statcards for them, as well as a small write-up, as I complete them, for use with Pulp Alley. So look out for that!

Thanks for reading and commenting.

Excellent, affun! THANKS for sharing the picks. I'm really looking forward to seeing these guys (and gals) in some Pulp Alley action.  ;)

Thanks for all of the lovely comments! I very much appreciate them all! (:

Too many simultaneous projects, eh?  ;)

I am not sure if I have too many projects, or am just enjoying painting whatever strikes my fancy  lol These Pulp Leagues should be quite finishable though - Over halfway through the first one allready.

***

I managed to finish painting Ming on a short visit at my parents:

So thats 3 out of 5 models of the league done (Though I am cheating: The dog was painted a while ago lol )

Another very great Copplestone miniature. I am particularly happy with how the gunmetal turned out. Looking over the picture, I notice a couple of splotches I need to touch up slightly, though.  ::)

I envisage Ming as a sharpshooter, and the brainy part of the league. Though his eyesight has suffered over the years of mercenary work, he is still profficient with his rifle.

In game terms, he is an Ally with the Marksman Trait, shooting on 3d6, and with 2d6 in Cunning. This leaves him vulnerable to attrition (having only a single d6 in dodging), but that fits perfectly with the theme of the character: I imagine him lurking around the outskirts of a skirmish, bidding his time, rather than fighting up front.
I like how Pulp Alleys league-building system really seems to encourage and enable you to add this sort of character to your fighters. :)

Cheers, and thanks for reading and commenting y'all!
