Frostgrave buildings and wizards
« on: 19 July 2015, 07:43:45 PM »
Whilst eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Frostgrave rules I've been making some buildings and dusting off and rebasing some old figures in preparation. I should be ready to play as soon as the rules arrive.
The buildings are made from 5mm styrofoam. It's an easy material to work with and making the buildings was pretty straightforward, and cheap. To make the four buildings shown here I used 10 sheets of A4 stryofoam, which cost £7 from an ebay seller.

This next one was a bit more time consuming to make, mainly because I used a double thickness of stryofoam for the tower. Doing so makes it look more like a fortified structure and gives a much stronger construction. I'd like to get hold of some 10mm styrofoam, and use thicker walls for more buildings.

I've ordered another pack of 10 sheets and I'll make a few more buildings, and that will give me enough for a large table full of terrain.

For the wizards, I thought I must have a few hidden away so I had a search through lots of figure boxes in the loft, and found this lot. I've rebased them all to look consistent and to fit the ruined town theme (they need drybrushing with light grey but I think that will be it). This gives me plenty of choice of wizards, and I will be able to provide warbands for multiplayer games.

Hard to believe those are just made of styrofoam. They look great!

I had a PM enquiring about the source for the 5mm styrofoam so I thought it would be better to post the answer here in case anyone else is interested. I bought them from UK ebay seller sparkes_will_fly. He doesn't have any listed at the moment but if you contact him he'll probably be getting more stock soon. He is also considering stocking 10mm styrofoam so if this is something you are interested in you could let him know. He has a website where there are photos of some of his own excellent terrain projects - I will be using these for inspiration.

These are fantastic, very effective! Are you using PVA to glue them up?

I have finished most of these buildings, including raised bases for some of them. I've also made a couple more buildings, and made some large levelling pieces. This gives me a lot of options as to how to set out the buildings and place some of them on different levels.

Here are some photos of the buildings set up for our first game. I haven'y had time to build the base board I was planning on using, so they are on my normal gaming cloth.

We had a fun first game. My warband was nearly wiped out completely - only my Wizard and two thiefs made it off the board, but both the thiefs were carrying treasure and one successful spell towards the end would have got me the third piece of treasure I would have needed to win (we had five treasures to collect).

Some photos from the game:

As has been said, it is hard to believe they are made from styrofoam. They look real nice. I guess the downside is they may break easily, but if you have the means to properly store them, I guess that is a non-issue.
