Morray that does seem like an incredibly narrow mind set. Lots of people might wish to buy the official figures for other things too, such as people playing Mordheim or many of the other plastic kitbashes that go on on this forum, are you saying they shouldn't do this as the figures are not designed for this?

Look at the run away success of IHMN, I don't think anyone here would argue a case for only using the Northstar figures, however excellent they are. I do agree it is important to support companies like Northstar, and I do so by actively and consciously buying as much as I can from them wherever possible. I don't think it is right to come here and start reprimanding people for trying to create different, interesting and unique warbands with other figures. It really doesn't seem to be in the spirit of the way the game is designed.

I'm new here so excuse the curiosity/naivety, if we want Frostgrave to do well and progress should we not be encouraging people (on basically the only forum online) To be buying the minis that are official for the game?

It seems everyone is buying up Reaper Bones miniatures which doesn't support Osprey in any way shape or form.

Am I wrong? ???

Well, the rulebook itself encourages the use of any miniatures you think are appropriate - see page 8.

I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, some of the metals are lovely, and the plastic box provides all kinds of awesome for the game. On the other hand, some of the metals are really fugly, and there are just so many options out there that it would be a shame to not look into them.

I also think it is kind of absurd to assume a form of moral obligation to support one company over others. Buy what you like, vote with your wallet.

welcome to the non-GW world.

There are rules.

There are figures.

There is terrain.

Sometimes you can buy all 3 for 1 company, more often you can buy all 3 from different companies.

Some people who write rules link them closely with a figure range - other rules just exist as rules, and the author is happy that you buy the rules and play them with any figures.

What I like about frostgrave is that unlike games workshop tournaments, etc. there is no one to say 'that's not a games workshop rider of rohan miniature or a conversion using one'. Instead you have a great set of rules from a great publishing company who have teamed up with a great miniature company to bring out some great themed miniatures. I've bought most of my warband from this range as I like them. But nowhere does anyone tell you that you have to use these miniatures only, which I feel adds to the appeal of the game as a whole

Hi guys,

Just to clarify a couple of points here, Osprey is co-producing the figures with North Star, so we would absolutely love people to buy the official Frostgrave figures.

That said, page 8. The freedom to use the models you want is something both Joe, the author, and I felt strongly about - who really enjoys having their choices dictated, especially in a skirmish game where your models are individual characters and not just nameless hordes?

Frostgrave is doing well in all regards - people are buying it (and the models!), people are playing it and, most importantly of all, people are enjoying it. Happily, that works in the other direction - the more people enjoy it, the more they'll play it, and the more we'll support it, with Thaw of the Lich Lord, Into the Breeding Pits, figures and the stuff that I'm not meant to talk about...

A condensed version of what I posted on the Facebook group is that it's also worth pointing out that Northstar are Distributors, so when you buy your Fireforge or Perry (for example) out of preference from your local (or favourite online) store, there's a good chance they are supplied by North Star anyway, so the money still reaches them. So there's a nice trickle down effect through us little stores too. The amount of cash I've given North Star since I set up my Frostgrave page has rocketed, even though I sell a lot of alternative minis and accessories.

Whooooah, boy was that a case of lost in translation!

Ok when the first chap got my point wrong I thought it was his fault, then the second, then third, then fourth and I've quickly realised my point was lost on everyone which is my fault! SO sorry.

Firstly this was just an subjective question, not an accusation, so this was in no part my thought process that you MUST BUY OFFICIAL MODELS, I was just broaching the subject.

I know a lot of people are emotional about their hobby and money so it's always a touchy subject, I was simply, and albeit innocently posting the question so it would be up for debate.

As has been said and written, "Do what you like" So that answers that I guess?

Thought I would suggest in the future folk don't jump down new posters throats, as that is rather intimidating, especially as I have quite clearly said in my defense;
"I'm new here so excuse the curiosity/naivety"
"I'm just putting the thought out there,"
"Obvs don't wanna ruffle feathers"
"not saying people SHOULD use official NS minis, just should we use them and support them?"
It's not very nice and doesn't shine the best light on what is apparently the only forum for Frostgrave.

First of all a belated welcome to the forum.

Secondly I'm not sure that it's a case of jumping down new posters throats, more a case of others expressing their opinions about where they might like to source figures for their collections. As you say you put the question out there so it was up for debate. In a debate you get conflicting views and opinions which I guess could be seen as intimidating, but I certainly don't think that will have been anyone's intention.

As I said 'welcome', and please continue sharing your thoughts on the hobby or your collections/ works in progress, but just be prepared for the odd debates when views differ :)

Well blooming heck, The official miniatures for Frostgrave are really, really cheap. That sounds really silly to me...

If it's not supported it wont sell and it will be stopped is all I'm saying.

These small business adventures need our support if you ask me, sorry for being rather preachy but I think I'm being fair.  :?

/Rant.

I agree about the small businesses which is why I am using miniatures available at my local game stores.  Sadly they can't get the frostgrave miniatures at the moment as they are sold out.

Yep fair one, thanks for the welcome Tyrion much appreciated.

Still up for debate if others want to say anything, guess I'm in a position where I want to support companies with my purchases, but I TOTALLY understand people using other figs.

My mate has an amazing collection of the original D&D figures from GW that they produced way back in the 80's that I'm hoping he'll let me snaffle up, all the old wandering monster figures like Cyclops and trolls etc. #veryexcited

Anyway I enjoy the passion here, good vibes :)

I've learned that when reading text on the internet, not to interpret the intent as argumentative or confrontational. Especially true when dealing with non English speakers. Of course, there is an occasional troll that wanted to rile you, but if you don't rise to their challenge they get bored and leave.

On the subject of Northstar miniatures, I would gladly source some miniatures from them if I needed them. The make some lovely lead.

I look at rules like Frostgrave as an opportunity to use miniatures I already have.  I've drifted away from systems like Malifaux, Hordes, etc where the rules and figures are tied together because I want to paint and play with figures I like, not be stuck with painting a mini I dislike because it's an insta-win for your force.

Seems a reasonable enough question to ask, and one of the responses was very definitely argumentative and confrontational.

Morray, for future reference, if you get an unduly aggressive or personal response to a post you have made, please just use the 'report to moderator' button at the foot of the post concerned.

Everyone yelling at Morray...Be nice to him this isn't "TMP" lol...

Use whatever figures you want. The Rules themselves have lots of photos of Fireforge figures as well as the Northstar line...I'm using both. Reaper is a solid choice as well, hell, do I even suggest the use of GW figures. Sure, go for it...

For what it's worth what I said wasn't meant to sound quite so dickish. I guess stuff can get lost in translation when it's all in text.
