Alternative figures for Frost grave
« on: August 13, 2015, 07:07:34 AM »
I Have started a couple of new themed war-bands while looking for suitably Wintry figures.
using Reaper bone Derros for a evil group.  They have a wintry look and have a Wizard.  might toss in a Durgar or two for extra support.

I also have on order a Russian type group (because who looks more wintry than Russians) using these Privateer press warmachine hordes Kahdor figures
woodsmen for troops, The crossbow men are really nice and have a head option so you can switch them out

the 3rd guy for an Apprentices wizard

And this guy for a Wizard with a Wizard staff to be added

The woodsmen are really usable and will fit in with any frostgrave warband.  recommended!

I have some Kossites in my force, they fit perfectly. Have you looked at the Greylord Escort - lovely figure and already has a staff.

I'm new here so excuse the curiosity/naivety, if we want Frostgrave to do well and progress should we not be encouraging people (on basically the only forum online) To be buying the minis that are official for the game?

It seems everyone is buying up Reaper Bones miniatures which doesn't support Osprey in any way shape or form.

Am I wrong? ???

You are right in that it is important for us to encourage the support of those companies that brtus the games we love. But at the same time some of us need cheaper options which reaper bones offer or more verity as we like to have different models then everyone else.

Well blooming heck, The official miniatures for Frostgrave are really, really cheap. That sounds really silly to me...

If it's not supported it wont sell and it will be stopped is all I'm saying.

These small business adventures need our support if you ask me, sorry for being rather preachy but I think I'm being fair.  :?

/Rant.

I should add I just bought into the game yesterday, I've bought the book, two wizard sets, the plastic box of infantry and three blisters of monsters and it all came to under...Well I've forgotten as I have bought a frost mat with it as well from Deep cut, but it was bloody cheap considering it was a complete buy in. ;)

Morray I agree with you, and when the next Nickstarter comes up I'm all in! <insert takemymoneymeme>

That said, I think a lot of us are probably Warhammer Fantasy and Mordheim players lost in the void and looking for something to fill it. We may already have a ton of figures (I have thousands) that we can and will use for Frostrgrave. I'm pretty sure I'll be personally trying to make a Warband for each different school...out of what I have.

While the Northstar figures are really nice there is some merit to having a cool, unique warband. It may even behoove Northstar to make a plastic box of just Wizard and Apprentices...maybe mix in some treasure counters and familiars/constructs at some point in the future so we can combine and build our own. Their existing box of Henchmen looks awesome, and as mentioned above I'm hoping it's available as an add on for the next Nickstarter <insert alt takemymoneymeme>. I don't care much for any of the current Wizard sculpts (just sayin'). They might be a little bit too throwback for me (I'm an old man and remember when D&D came out...)

I'm also thinking since Frostgrave is on it's third printing in a month that Osprey (mainly a book publisher) is probably really ok with the way things are going for them. I'm hoping that Northstar is getting a lot of attention too and is also doing well.

People should support both...but I can't blame anyone for using alt miniatures at this point.

I bought the official soldiers when the game was released, but I have a lot of other stuff that I'd like to use. There's also plenty of stuff that Northstar don't make (most of the bestiary), and for the specialist soldiers it'd be good to have more than one pose available (barbarians, knights, templars, apothecaries etc). I also like a bit more of an eclectic selection for my wizards.

Also the Northstar blisters aren't the most customer friendly. The wizards and apprentices make sense (since you'll generally want/need both) but it'd be nice to be able to get the other miniatures individually. I need a couple of ice toads but I don't need more leopards, since I can't buy them separately I'm looking for toads elsewhere. Same with the apothecary and thief (which I want) and the marksman and barbarian (which I don't). I'd even pay slightly more per figure to be able to get them individually.

At the end of the day though, Osprey are the publishers, not Northstar. With the number of books sold this game can be classed as a runaway success for them even if no more figures ever get sold (not that I'm recommending that people avoid the minis, far from it). Plus, I'm kinda fed up with being told I have to use the "official" miniatures. It's fantasy, I'd like to exercise my imagination. :D

Thanks for the honesty.
I'm just putting the thought out there, much like a lot of people (Probably here) AoS has killed off Fantasy gaming for me, but part of the thing why I believe Gw went that route was because there's such an inbed of alternative models for the game, so they killed it because no one was buying it.

Now we have a great game here (By the looks not actually played yet!) And some great minis at great prices, and folk are still going for alternative models, and even promoting it activley on one of the only forums for the game...

I question that choice ethically, morally etc

So northstar make the models, and Osprey make the rules, so Northstar are potentially taking the hit then...

Obvs don't wanna ruffle feathers as I'm new here as well and new to the game, not saying people SHOULD use official NS minis, just should we use them and support them? Or will Osprey just stop asking NS to make them if they dont sell and the books will just be sold as a stand alone?

(And is that a good thing? I doubt it imho)

Yes, you are wrong.
Firstly, the figures and rules are produced by separate companies. If the rules sell well (which they seem to be doing) I'm sure Osprey will commission more supplements, regardless of how well the Northstar figures sell.
Secondly, this is not an official manufacturers or publishers forum. Players are free to post on here with any ideas and suggestions about what figures they are using for the game. In fact, there is more reason to post about non-official figures, as everyone is aware of the Northstar figures, but many of us would like to see what figures others are using.

This isn't GW. Frostgrave is a set of rules that can be used with any figures (like most games in the non-GW world). Northstar happens to make some nice figures for the game.
There is nothing ethically or morally wrong with players using, discussing or promoting any figures they like, and I think it is quite insulting and shows poor judgement on your part to suggest that there is.
