My terrain for Gothic Horror is dark brown base boards with very dark grey rock formations and loads and loads of fir trees to simulate the dark mountainous region of Transylvania!  :)

As an alternative what about a snowscape? i have seen a few horror games played on a snow textured bord, with dark ruins and pine forests and it looked very good.
