Those pictures remind me of the my tour of the Edinburgh South Bridge Vaults. They were used as workshops in the 18th Century and in the 19th were reported to have been used for meetings of the infamous Hellfire Club (according to my guide anyway!).

With Liverpool Port being a bridge between worlds who knows what exotic practices and schemes may have gone on there.
