Review of Galleys & Galleons
« on: 18 September 2015, 07:01:10 AM »
Hi!

Over on my blog, I've a review of the new naval rules published by Ganesha Games, Galleys & Galleons. Short version: They are fabulous! They use the Ganesha Games activation mechanics and have a very clever solution to the perennial bugbear of naval wargaming, namely tracking damage.

The rules are intended for the 17th and 18th century, but there are also some optional special rules to play ancient or even fantasy battles.

Cheers

Thanks for that, went completely under my radar for some reason. o_o
Is there a word on scale? That is, which sizes are assumed for models, bases and playing area?

You can use any scale and any bases. There are recommendations for three scales concerning the distances, one set if you use a playing area of 50cmx50cm (which would probably work best with 1/2400 or smaller ships), one set for an area of 90cmx90cm and one for an area of 120cmx120cm (Ganesha Games rules always use a set of three measuring sticks for short, medium and long distances). Those are minimum playing areas, larger ones are recommended.

The game recommends games of 50 to 200 points, which would be 1 to 6 or 7 ships per player I guess.

Again, thanks. :) Sounds achievable, still have some 1/2400 scale ships floating around and a relatively large sea mat. Might give it a try then.

You're welcome! I also prefer 1/2400, it's affordable and playable on a medium sized table.
