plywood sheets?
« on: November 09, 2008, 05:04:11 PM »
Does anyone know a good (cheap) source of 0.8mm thick plywood sheets? (can be 1mm thick at a pinch). :)

You may want to take a look at the Litko site; http://www.litkoaero.com/

I’m not sure but I think that they can arrange to sell you plywood sheet if you e-mail them your request.

Hope that helps.

A CANADIAN local hobby store with a small selection of historical wargames miniatures (mainly from Warlords). They also have a great selection of paint and hobby accessories from Vallejo, Army painter, AK Interactive, Green Stuff World and more.; https://www.kingdomtitans.ca/us/

I have no idea if making plywood that thin is even possible - surely the simple fact that it is made of three sheets would make it too thick for your purposes.

What are you using it for? I'm fairly sure you can get MDF that thin (or nearly) but I don't recall ever seeing ply like that.  :?

Or, given that you're in Belgium and Litko are in the US, somwhere closer might be cheaper on postage

UK (sorry, I tried searching google.be - but neither my French nor Flemish is up to the job!): http://shop.instant-shop.com/bagpress/product280374catno80374.html (heavy on postage!)

I would say ask Fenris Games, but their bases are 1.5mm thick, I think.  But Geronimo might be able to tell you where you can buy it, if you contact him and ask really nicely :)

Well, yes, I actually ordered some thin plywood bases from Litko and it occurred to me that since you can cut it so easily, it would make good planking for putting on cardboard Old West buildings. So I was wondering if there were any sources a bit closer to home for whole sheets of the stuff. :)

I should think the MDF would be cheaper and easier to cut, plywood tends to rip ragged when cutting

That is normally very true, Lowtardog.  But when you're using the 0.8mm flexible stuff, and a sharp knife, it cuts really quite nicely.

Well MDF doesn't look like real wood. And I found the 0.8mm plywood can be cut easily with old scissors (at least, my litko bases can be).

I always use good old balsa.Cheap, light and cuts very easily. Too flimsy and curls on bases but ideal for oversticking card buildings.

I always buy mine from the local model shop but there are plenty of places like here

don't know how your location will affect postage though

I would say balsa is good for planking and roof shingles that sort of thing. It is worth trying local model shops that sell model boats and trains etc.

Here is a Belgian site with some good links, not exactly sure what is written  ;D but looks promising. You may also find a source for marine plywood from these shops as it has been used for model boats for a long time

Thin ply does exist.  One of my model railroad craftsman kits has some parts lasercut from 1mm 3-ply.  Midwest Products Co., Inc., at least, makes it in 1/64 x 6 x 12 sheets.  Don't know where you'd buy it, though.

Why do people persist in using balsa for wood that is visible on a model? I know it's relatively cheap but it's far too grainy, difficult to cut cleanly and soaks up paint like a sponge.  I only use balsa as a filler or hidden support.  If making wooden walls or roofs or even just loose boards, I always use basswood (lime).  It may cost a few cents more but it can be easily cut and sanded and takes paint or stains like a dream.  It's available in dozens of different sizes of precut strips and sheets and you can even get some fancy sidings like clapboard or board & batten.
Why take Life seriously? You'll never get out of it alive!
