The Men Who Would be Kings at Hereward Wargame Show 1.11.15!!
« on: September 21, 2015, 11:29:43 PM »
I am extremely (no...make that...EXTREMELY!! :D) chuffed to announce that Osprey have given me the go-ahead to demo a participation game for The Men Who Would Be Kings, their upcoming (summer 2016) Colonial rules at the first ever Hereward wargame show in Peterborough on Sunday 1st November. http://www.hereward-wargames.co.uk   https://www.facebook.com/herewardwargamesshow?fref=ts

You may have seen some of my previous play test posts about it here or on my blog.

My good friend Andy MacTaggart and I will be hosting the game and we hope that rules author Dan Mersey will join us for the day, which will help us remember the rules!!! (He's a local boy, apparently, so we just need to drag him back to his roots for the day!!)

Expect heroics (possibly of the last-stand variety if the dice roll badly!), derring-do, tiffin, stiff-upper lips and and all manner of dastardly-ness as the glorious forces of Her Majesty Queen Victoria battle the wily Pathan on the NW Frontier...

I do hope that a few of you may get over to watch or join in  ;)

I must say, a trip back to Peterborough has rarely seemed so appealing…!

Will the rules extend to the 1930s on the northwest frontier or is that a tad modern for them?

Your 1930s setting is a tad modern, although you might get it to work...you'd need to make some adaptations to get armoured cars in, for example, and your 1930s Pathans probably wouldn't field as many sword wielding ghazis as the 19th century variant, but it could be done with the troop and weapon options available in the rules...

Intriguing. I have long been wanting to do some sort of project based on Stirling's The Peshawar Lancers.
Granted that's an alternative history/sci-fi-ish novel, but straightforward NWF is also one of those things I've been 'planning' to do for ages, so I too shall look forward to hearing more about the rules  :D

We have found that the rules work well for us in NW Frontier games, but then we have the knowledge of the period to enable us to use the flexibility of the rules and troop types to tailor the game nicely. You'll find a few threads about our NW Frontier playtests elsewhere in the Colonial board or on my blog.

What's wrong with Peterborough? Or is that a blatantly obvious question?  ??? ??? ???

I may just have to pop down if I can arrange transport- only polite really (well, I'll give it a punt) :)

Sounds great, I'll have to drop over for a couple of hours.

It's always good to support a local show as well.  :D

You kinda need to live here to understand! 😀

It'd be great to see you if you can make it

Ray - do pop over. It'd be great to see you too. 😀

A riddle wrapped up in an enigma! How could I resist now?  ;) :)

I'll see if I can make it.

What's wrong with Peterborough?

The only time I ever truly lived in the city, I was an archaeologist living in a wasp-infested caravan. And I got a skin infection from the peat. That was enough for me.

The rest of time, I just lived nearby and popped in for a bit of 'sophistication'.

As Andy says, you could use them but they're not written specifically for that period so there are no rules for armoured cars or aircraft. I am working on some optional rules that won't be in the rulebook but will appear online or in a magazine though.
