BigRedBat's very occasional MIRs
« on: 15 October 2015, 05:01:27 PM »
Like Phil Robinson I am slowly building up a Middle Imperial army.  This is definitely the best unit so far; they are painted and (mostly) based by David Imrie and I have decided that they represent II Adiutrix.

Soon I'll take some pictures of the various other units of my vexillatio.  More on t'blog:

Best, Simon

*sigh* If only there were more people interested in 3rd century Romans. I simply adore these A&A minis – and Mr Imrie made them shine! Striking colour scheme, expertly painted, rounded off by atmospheric basing. A real showcase. :-*

Beautiful choice of palette, especially the white. A&A have some excellent figures, I'm not much on Romans until they start to crap out toward the end, but I'm tempted to build in this period just to be able to field their Palestinian Clubmen.

Related question: can mail and lorica be used in the same unit?

Excellent, good to see this unit rounded out and plugging the much neglected 3rd century. I have started another legionary unit with the same shield design and legion as they spent a few years on the Danube frontier in the period and used the boar and Pegasus emblems.

MIR- the forgotten army!  I fear that my other units will fall well short of this standard.

Yes Mike hamata, segmentata and squamata, shields both oval and rectangular can be mixed with glorious abandon.  It was a time of crisis.

Thanks, Simon

That's what I love about it. And you can justify vexillations from different legions working together too. It's a wargamer's delight. And, in the early Sassanids, you've got an enemy good enough to give them a proper run for their money - as well as being very different and making a very attractive army in their own right.

I've always wanted a Sassanid army...   I have heard that they work well in my rules...  :-)

I know someone who's going to be bringing out a new range of Sassanids. ;) I may have to replace some of mine with new ones.

Sassanids? Bah! Some inspired manufacturer needs to put out a decent range of Blemmyes.

Are the A&A line compatible with Aventine?

Hi Mike, pretty much I'd say, although I've not yet had cause to mix them.  Same sculptor (hi Smithy!), similar style.  Aventine feet are larger.
