Prince Bishopric of Munster 1672- uniform colours???
« on: November 08, 2015, 09:04:09 AM »
I would love to put together a Munster army to fight some Dutch in 1672. Now i assume I just use the generic stuff available for the period but the problem comes when i paint the uniform. Has anyone got any information whatsoever on the Bishop of Munsters troops in 1672?

If indeed they were uniformed, at least in the sense that most wargamers would recognise. This was virtually the dawn of the age of the uniform.

The only illustration I have ever seen is Bernhard von Galen's illustration of the siege of Groningen.

You can find a portrait of his lordship here along with the illustration of the battle.

Personally and in the absence of better detail, I'd go with un-uniformed with maybe a bodyguard in somthing based on the bishop's personal livery.

Try this for some fragmentary information. Excellent blog, well worth the read if you aren't aware of it already:

Of course the units hired out by Münster were uniformed, like all other units of that age.
Try to find out, if Robert Hall has worked on the troops of Münster.

A quick search on the Vinkhuisen collection in the New York public library only came up with two potentially useable plates.

One from 1648 showed Munster standard bearers in red cassocks. The other was much much later and showed two regiments in blue with yellow and blue with red cuffs, turn backs etc. But this was 1793.

There may be more in there of use to you as its a large collection of plates. Sadly most of them for this period in the Netherlands file seem to be un coloured.
