Having a keen interest in all things Mexican, as well sculpted as these cavalry figures are I think it would be remiss of me not to qualify the comment to the effect that they can be used to depict troops of the Mexican Revolution:

1. Lances weren't employed in the 1910 - 1920 conflict.

2. Obviously the muzzle-loading carbines are well and truly obsolete. Only a Zapatista peon infantryman would be seen with such an antique, and then only out of desperation for any kind of firearm - and it would be ditched as soon as something more modern could be obtained.

3. The traditional Mexican charro/vaquero costume the irregulars are sculpted in would only be worn as full dress for ceremonial purposes, and then only by bodyguard and possibly some rurales units. I know there's a plate in the MR Osprey that depicts the Dorados in this style of costume, but in photos of the unit in the field they're wearing much more up-to-date, practical, drab clothing. Also note that the Dorado shown in the plate is armed with a Mauser bolt-action magazine-loading carbine.

I think that about covers it :-).

Leigh

interesting submission....and point taken
.....
many of the new castings are pistol armed
and are not all armed with carbines so lance
chaps can be left out but to be honest the
rate of advancement in dress did not really
appiy to Mexico..........so I reckon there
was loads of old kit used both in dress arms :D
post Santa Anna things moved at a glacial pace.. o_o 8) :o :D

Foundry have rereleased their Maximilian range... shame size wise they're not that compatible - but Foundry has artillery and Imperial troops... competition Ged?

(Is your Maximilian range like waiting for George RR Martin's next A Song of Ice and Fire book?  lol - Good things come eventually?  :D)

I have used Ged's figures with the newer Foundry Old West Mexicans. The older Maximillian range are more 25mm than 28mm so they don't mix very well.

I've got Foundry units made up from Mexicans from the Old West Range - what was until recent the 'South of the Border' collection - so figures from Foundry packs OW162, 163, 164, 165, 167, 168

https://www.wargamesfoundry.com/collections/old-west?page=6

Those are all 25mm rather than 28mm. They're fine in seperate units, and nice enough figures but definitely not mix and match with Gringos (even taking into account that not all people are the same size and height!). Some were so small by comparison that I just got rid of them. Although strangely, the 'Capt Zacarias' figure in OW167 Mexican Soldiers Command is actually pretty similar in size to some of Gringos.

I haven't yet tried any from what was their Mexican Adventure Collection: OW171 - OW178 - don't know if there is a size difference there, but I think those are the sets people have said are closer to 28s.

They've just rereleased their original Maximilian Adventure range too, which is what I think you're referring to? In a seperate category from the Old West range - haven't yet got any of those but I may well do, even if for seperate units, as they've got things like Imperial Infantry and suchlike.

Upshot being: Foundry figures are nice, size varies and mostly too small to mix with Gringos, but will do in seperate units.
Gringo's are excellent, lovely to paint, I mean really lovely, and worth waiting for expansions to the range  :D (But in the meantime I'll happily paint some smaller chaps too)

The Foundry Mexican 'range' is actually the amalgamation of various sub-ranges sculpted by different designers, hence the variations in size.

Packs OW161 to OW 168 were all done by Mark Copplestone, except the officers in pack OW 164 which come from the Maximilian expedition range sculpted by Aly Morrison. The same figures are also found in pack Max001 (mostly). Aly's sculpts are definitely smaller than their Copplestone colleagues, being more slender and closer to 26mm than 28.

Packs OW 171 to OW 178 were later additions to the range, done after Mark Copplestone had left Foundry. These were sculpted by Mike Owen and tend to be a bit larger, though not by much. They'll dwarf the Aly Morrison figures though, and they are done in a different style.
