Alternative mounts for GW LOTR Rohan?
« on: December 06, 2015, 09:30:56 PM »
Hi folks - I have bought a job lot of Riders of Rohan and wonder if anyone knows of horses they may fit (the originals are all snapped off at the hoof!) - looked at 1st Corps and maybe Newline as they are "true" 25mm - any ideas?

ALL of the Rohan horse snap at the hoof, they are balls. Too bad, because the minis are great.

Have you considered alpacas?

I wonder if Ebob's horses might work for you: link.

Edit:

Some of the Perry Miniatures cavalry boxes might also work, and they are plastic I think - less chance of breaking. They are also a more "natural" scale and not "heroic", so have a better chance of matching the LOTR figs size-wise.

The Perry suggestion is a good one but only if i could get seoerate horses - will have to peruse their sprues!

Perry miniatures sell 3 plastic unbarded horses on a sprue for less than 4£.

A very good fit once the pommel and cantle were carved off (very easy process)
They are a few mill taller than the GW mounts but perfectly acceptable.

Should be OK height-wise for GB but I worry about the width. I seem to recall GB riders have a wide seat?

At £3(ish) for a sprue of three I would certainly give them a try

Yes the Gripping Beast riders have a wide seat, as you put it lol.Thats part of the problem I have with the horses they come with. They are skinny for the riders,at least most of the riders.Plus there are only 3 poses and some of the details are either soft or badly cast, I cant really tell which.
Funnily enough I like the way they fit on the GW LOTR horses I have, just don't have enough of them.
So my next question would be, are the Perry horses you bought as wide as the Rohirrim horses?
Thanks, Pete
