I had to Google to see what one looks like. A nice representation. Maybe needs dust dry briushed along the bottom half? Looks a little clean.

(I'd have to learn to dusty up vehicles before I could fix that...)

Ahem, erm  -  ANP trucks I saw in Kandahar all looked pretty shiny and clean compared to everything else on the roads.  Except the burnt out shells of ANP trucks, that is.

Some more painting (see the blog for more photos and blether:

http://willstoysoldiers.blogspot.ca/

First off, camels!

I just received this group of camels in a figure swap with Sterling Moose.  Love 'em, even though I should probably only use the naked one for modern games!

Plus some armed Afghan warriors (not sure if they are local militia, insurgents, criminals or just chaps with guns...)

Looking out for trouble:

The neighbourhood watch:

You'll have to speak up.  This guy next to me is talking too loud!

Camels are old Ral Partha, Brigands' Treasure Caravan (bringing back memories of my ill-spent youth exploring dungeons and other locales).  Afghans are from Eureka, with some turbans and one head swap.

I slapped some paint on a die cast 1:43 Mercedes in hopes of getting a representation of an Afghan taxi (which should be a Toyota Corona!).  The problem with the die-cast toys is that they're simply too big.  So while there's some obvious sloppiness with the paint, I'm not motivated to clean it up as the car would still be too big.

Check out the Siku brand of die casts, IIRC their stuff is in the 1:50 to 1:55 range for scale, and they do make Toyotas

Thanks, Matt.  I had a quick look at the Siku website and it looks like they may have some suitable sedans.  I've already picked up a Mercedes truck that will be jingleised - now to see if I can find a local supplier for more of their vehicles (as my Canadian pesos aren't worth much in Deutschmarks these days!).

I have some Leyland trucks coming from a Hong Kong Ebayer that with a bit of work will become localised truckers. The range has Commers and Leyands but I think they are the same truck rebadged. There are also some others on Ebay that are British origin as well. I think I will get some of the DMH baggage with covering tarps as cargo.
Cheers,

Another good source of in scale cars is the Disney Pixar range, which are 1/55. Naturally enough you need to paint out the anthropomorphic faces and occasionally file back or putty over mouths but some of the range is very useful and they are cheap and readily available. If you look for the Vladimir Trunkov model for example you'll find it's a pretty accurate representation of a Russian ZAZ -968. They have a few generic sedans that readily convert to taxis etc.

Thanks, Carlos, I can find some of those Disney Cars fairly easily (and if they don't work for me I can give them to my kids!)

Love this thread!!

Just picked up some Afghan civvies myself from Fighting 15s. Personally I don't mind the 1:43 vehicles but i take the point and am currently painting up a Toyota flatback in 1:56

I've made a bit of progress, which is to be seen in my photo-heavy, text light blog post here:
http://willstoysoldiers.blogspot.ca/2016/01/more-insurgents.html

Some highlights:

More insurgents, courtesy Eureka Miniatures.  The two on right have been head swapped with Old Glory Pathans;

Coming along nicely. I think a tractor trailer rig, would make a nice linear terrain piece. Maybe you'll need to source one for your own.

Thanks.  I'll keep my eyes open for another big rig, but it's not my top priority.  Now a combi van or a pickup may have some uses...

I've now converted and painted the little red Cars car, now a typical yellow and white Afghan taxi.
