The only varnish I use is a spray of Testors Dullcoat.
For decals and flags I give a coat of Liquitex gloss varnish before the Dullcoat to give added protection & prevent shrinkage.

Yeah, I used to use Dullcoat a lot back in the day.... until the EU insisted that they desist from selling here or they change the formula. The white tins are rubbish in terms of the matte finish one gets when compared to the old black tins sadly. I use Windsor and Newton Artists Quality Spray now (as suggested to me by our very own Jeff on LAF) and haven't looked back.

I can still pick up Dullcoat in the Model shops here, but may have to see if I can find some of that W&N spray you mention in an Art Supplies place in Tasmania. Do you know if any of the other artist brand sprays work as well as the W&N?

Windsor and Newton Artists Quality Matt (in a spray can)- about £12 a pop but well worth it.

It's flatter than the new Dullcoat formula (if you can still get your mitts on the old formula for *@#* sake use a respirator- it's really nasty stuff and a carcinogen).

Really beautiful!  When I put together my African collection I decided to go with a generic Hollywood look for my African tribesmen, but I do love the Masai, and yours are causing me to regret that I didn't do them... I may have to rethink that possibility and revisit Africa once more.  Thanks for posting.  Richard

I make sure I'm breathing through a cigarette when I spray dullcote Darrell, no problems so far 

Those Masai are excellent! Love the muted colours. I'll be copying that if I ever get around to painting mine
