If you knock a bloke down in single combat does that 'break' contact meaning you have to roll two activations next turn... one to reach him and one to mallet 'im?

Don't think so. Pushing back does (or you can choose to play that you can follow up if you want)

Rules don't really say do they. But I would assume as they say the Pushing back is like a creature taking a strategic retreat that "falling" would mean the creature is still within range and able to be struck again. The one attacking them would be making the most of the situation.

That's how I kind of see it, a push-back means your opponent's recoiled out of reach of your assault. Knocking a baddy down/stunning him will keep the base to base contact in my games, chances are he'll get up next move, if he doesn't... then he deserves the foot of cold steel in the melon he gets!
