28mm Futuristic train. 11/22 Finished!
« on: January 08, 2016, 10:34:01 PM »
I have found my sci-fi train engine!

Ever since I found the three cars from the Pixar train set...
http://www.amazon.com/Disney-Pixar-Buzz-Friends-Train/dp/B000VHITF0
...at the resale shop I've been looking for a suitable futuristic engine to go with it.  I've taken off the characters and gathered a few bits to add some detail to the cars, but otherwise they've sat unused.

Yesterday I found the engine from this set...
http://www.amazon.com/CAT-Motorized-Construction-Express-995676/dp/B00ONW34XG
...for 3 bucks.  It's a nice caricature of a diesel with enough differences to make it feel a bit future'ish. Its got plenty of detail (though I may add a few bits here and there) and its nice and big. Scales well with the Pixar cars at somewhere between O and G "size".

Haven't put it on any track yet, but the gauge looks to be just about the 1.25" that would make it compatible with the 3-rail o Gauge track that I've been using for my sci-fi city setup! It's been a while, but IIRC, the Pixar cars will run on O track.

Here's what the engine looks like alongside 28mm figs. It's suitably, awesomely big.  Now I just need to pop some batteries in it and see if it runs.

Definitely a great deal.
Still, even at $50, it's a pretty good deal. For the price of one or two O scale train cars you get a whole train!  I'm lucky to have the Toy Story box'ish cars, but I can think of all kinds of great sci-fi stuff you could do with the cars that come with the cat train.

That they fit on O-gauge tracks is great also.

Bang some extra plates and what not and it would look pretty good and a quick repaint.
Cant wait to see it fully done :D

Thanks!
I agree. I don't plan to do much too it. Maybe a more scale-appropriate ladder and a couple of hatches.  The real work will be on greebling up the 3 box'ish cars for it to pull.  I'd love to have it ready for my sci-fi city by the time Adepticon rolls around, but it probably won't happen.

Finally started work on the Sci-Fi Train.  Here's the cars.  Mostly stock so far, except that I've ripped out some of the Disney characters and logos.  I'm waiting on a trade with my buddy for some Sedition wars doors that will be used for the sides of the yellow and green cars.

The cars are from the Disney Pixar train. I've already ripped off much of the disney details.

These trains were lucky finds.  I found the cars minus the engine at one store and the Engine minus it's cars at another store months later but they all match up in size.  Though larger in height than actual "O" (1/48) they will look great for a mega sci-fi train and they all roll nicely on O-Gauge track which happens to be what I'm using for my sci-fi train project.

Unrelatedly, I had to show off this find, though most of this will not end up as actual trains. Just today I made the kind of resale find that we toybashers dream about.

Upon opening it up I found that the Transformer Engine and most of the track was missing, but $20 -though expensive for a resale find- was well worth what was included. so I bought it anyway.  Here's what I did get.
The cars:

-Caboose: great basis for a small building
-Flat car:  Great necromunda walkway
-Gondola: Excellent armored walkway for Necromunda. I've already got three of these and want to make many more.
-Hopper car:  Chop the bottom of these off and glue in some ballast and you've got an awesome mining skip. I've also built two of these already.

Crane. Hard to think of an era from the 20's through grimdark that couldn't use one of these!

3 diferent Cargo Sprues
I-beams, cargo, crates, axles, Pallets, etc.  This stuff is modeling gold. I had three of these as a kid and am really glad to get some more.

Cargo Truck.  This baby is probably getting post-apocified.

Insert.
Even the plastic insert that would have held the track, transformer, and Engine could be useful.  Great -possibly sci-fi- shapes and it seems to be made of thicker polystyrene than most contemporary vacu-formed inserts.

Just finished the construction phase of my Sci-Fi Train.

More pics and construction details here:

Any suggestions on paint.  Colors?  Unified or each car different?.

I would go with unified colors but heavy on the graffiti. Google railroad graffiti and you will come up with a ton of images.
