Cheetors Shonen Knives: Test of Honour 09/05/17
« on: January 20, 2016, 10:37:15 PM »
I stick to sci-fi miniature painting almost exclusively, but for a chunk of this years hobby time I will be prepping some figures and terrain for some Frostgrave gaming.  These are the first three models, some old Citadel Chaos Warriors.

The lovely visual theme in the Frostgrave books is snow and ice.  Its beautiful and comprehensively done, but its doesnt suit the terrain sets that I have.  In order to make it work I am working on a jungle setting, a "Sweatgrave" if you will.  More of that to come.

In the meantime, these three are what I have to start.

More photos and chat about the whys and wherefores of the project are in the blog post for anyone inclined.

Comments and criticisms very welcome :)

Thanks for looking!

Those look fantastic!

I used to have that middle chaos warrior model, but I think I lost it. Now I feel slightly sad!

I used to have that middle chaos warrior model, but I think I lost it. Now I feel slightly sad!

My knowledge of the old Citadel fantasy ranges is not as encyclopaedic as it approaches with the old Citadel 40k range, so tracking down specific miniatures for this project was a journey of discovery for me.  The Chaos Warrior with the shield was not one that I was familiar with at all and it was a little bit of a stretch to add him in here thematically speaking.  I think that the dragon helm and plume plus judicious use of the rule-of-cool allows him to sit well with them though.

Thanks for the feedback!

Very nice paint job. These minis are autentic relics!

They are really rather old now, with a release date in the mid eighties.

I try not to get too caught up in the nostalgia about old Citadel, but in the same breath, I do enjoy getting to paint figures that I have only seen in pictures for the last thirty years.

Thanks for the feedback Lord Borajo :)

Thanks Zaheer.  I find that I tend to incorporate pop culture references into my projects for a few reasons.  Sometimes they are funny and sometimes they serve as a springboard for further ideas for example.

By way of example, the ninja that I am currently working on bear a palette resemblance to the "Foot" clan in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for example.  That in turn has defined the black and purple scheme overall.

Those are some wonderfully old school models, beautiful paint jobs, and they totally fit together! Well done.

NOOOOOOO!  :o

I've managed to resist Frostgrave for soooo long, now you go and do it! You're a bad influence! There's been soooo much about it, that it's put me off in all honesty! ....but your project I'll follow with interest!

Great paint jobs mate! :o

Now get back to your 2000AD project! ;)

I will, but it wont be for a while yet.  This is a dalliance, Dredd is a lifestyle choice ;)

Thanks Daniel.  The next guys will meet your approval too I hope...

Ninja next:

These are mid eighties Citadel, like the three Chaos Warrior/Samurai last time.  Petite little sculpts with loads of retro charm.

Some unarmoured samurai and ashiguru next I think, or maybe some oni.  I dont know yet.

Thanks for looking.  More photos and details are in the blog post for anyone interested.

Thanks for looking! Comments and criticisms all received gladly  :)

They all meet my approval, including the scenery!
(Not that you need my approval haha)

Lovely ninja. And well suited for plenty of other settings too.

The Garden of Morr is a fantastic kit, well worth the cost.  Ignore the naysayers.

Oh definitely.  Ubiquitous really.

Definitely.  Some ninja (presumably full of Hondo wetware), a couple of bososoku on nice bikes,  some guys in suits, some mecha samurai, some cyber sumo and Im ready to go.  Add Inaba to the Dredd force for extra theming.

I have all of those figures in the to-do pile too, its just a matter of getting to them.

But thats a discussion for another topic :)
