I am not sure I have it in me to replace all the image links. Photobucket has effectively burned all the archives.

I understand it.
A few years ago i got the same bad surprise from imageshark who took in hostage my  archives if i didn't want to pay .
This is why i keep my own archives. in my hardrive and in a cloud for my blog.

AFAIK you can still access them directly on photobucket. Best to download them to a harddrive and rehost somewhere else.  Manually relinking pictures will be pretty tedious though, can't say I blame you for not wanting to do that.
